DON TAPSCOTT is the CEO of the Tapscott Group and one of the most influential living theorists about business and society. In November 2013, Thinkers50 named Don as the 4th most important business thinker in the world. A June 2013 Forbes.com analysis of social media identified Don as the most influential management thinker in the world. He is the author or co-author of 15 widely read books about new technologies and new media in business and society, including Wikinomics and The Digital Economy. ALEX TAPSCOTT is the CEO and founder of Northwest Passage Ventures, an advisory firm building blockchain companies. In 2014 he wrote the seminal report on governing digital currencies for the Global Solutions Network program at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Prior to founding Northwest Passage Ventures, he worked for seven years in investment banking in New York and Toronto.

The Blockchain Revolution by Don and Alex Tapscott is a book aimed at people who are interested in how digital technology is changing the world around them, and is a continuation of the work that Don and his colleagues have done since the 1990s on exploring the developing world of digital technologies and their impact on our lives. While it explains the basics of blockchain technology, which is the newest of these technologies, it is not a book on the inner workings of the technology and its first major application, Bitcoin.The Blockchain Revolution, first and foremost, explains why blockchain technology is different from today’s environment of largely centralized databases, and then explores the rather incredible potential that the technology has for our future. In its essence, a blockchain is a truly distributed, peer-to-peer database that does not require a central administrator. When implemented for Bitcoin, it creates a currency that is not run or controlled by a government or even a bank, which obviously scares both types of organizations half to death. As the expression goes, it is power to the people. In its essence, blockchain technology has the potential to change how the underlying technology world around us works, and to disrupt our relationships to governments and key societal institutions like banks and stock markets. It also has the potential to allow entirely new peer-to-peer businesses to develop that avoids the consequential giant databases of information that can be hacked and then used for nefarious purposes like identity theft.The Blockchain Revolution is an excellent exploration of the implications of blockchain technology, including its disruptive potential, along with the warts associated with its background and actual implementation. Of most importance, it looks at the technology through the lens of the principles of the era of networked intelligence that Don and his colleagues have so eloquently identified in books like The Digital Economy, Wikinomics, and Macrowikinomics. If you’re interested in how the world around us is developing, Blockchain Revolution is one of those books that goes out on a limb about its potential and, as a result, can only add to your understanding. While you may not agree with its conclusions, it makes you think about them in new ways, which has always been the most important part of Don’s books.
I've got 2 hours and 10 minutes remaining on my Audible copy of Blockchain Revolution and here's what I think so far: This book should be required reading / listening for anyone with a future that includes internet based technologies; from infrastructure to implementation, especially for young adults with a lifetime of tech ahead of them. Why? Because what you learn in this book will help you navigate the inevitable future of technology and how the Blockchain will likely impact the world's societies for the better. Also, by understanding the Blockchain, you will give your CV a significant edge as the "Blockchain" buzzword starts ramping up.On the practical side, Blockchain Revolution will help you with geeky, casual conversation. You'll gain a general understanding of Bitcoin and what it means to "mine Bitcoin". It will fill you in on WHO is investigating and actually using Blockchain technology today (companies like AirBNB, Deloitte, USAA, IBM). The book will boost your comfort level with terminology like cryptocurrencies, permissionless distributed databases, hashing, blockchain transaction methodologies, smart contracts, and much more. You'll also be able to build a solid list of today's big players in the Blockchain world, so you'll know who to follow on Twitter as you're watching this technology unfold.On the dreamy world of dreams side, after reading Blockchain Revolution, I imagine that IF the potential for global prosperity were being delivered by a magic train, then Blockchain would be the rails. We are about to see, in the next 25 years, the elimination of barriers to entry for any and all business. I can see the Blockchain as the catalyst for an experimental, open source government... not Anarchy but an Open Source Democracy... An Openocracy? Anyway, this book made me think. Now I need YOU to read it so we can ponder the future together! Maybe over coffee... or beers.Hopefully, the Blockchain will be a tool to help us navigate through the uncharted waters of the impending (yet still theoretical) post-employment era as we approach the theoretical "singularity".Lastly, on the quality of the audiobook, it is fantastic. It's read by Audie Award Winning Audiobook Narrator Jeff Cummings, so it's really as good as it possibly could be. I sorta wish I had a copy of the physical book as well because some of the referenced names are foreign to my western ears. It took me an embarrassing amount of lunchbreak research to figure out that the person Jeff was talking about was "Dino Mark Angaritis" and not any number of other mishearings I was trying to process.
