Loved it! Brad Gilbert have a really analytic way of looking at tennis, which make it easy to implement his strategies. His mantra is "always observe and analyse". Some of the quotes that helped me with my game was these:"Develop your powers of observation and analyse and then use the information, and your chances of winning will go up by 20 percent or more.""The Game Plan: This process of review will lead me right into the equally important process of planning my strategy; 1. What do I want to make happen? 2. What do I want to prevent from happening?""Most recreational players watch a match like they're looking at somebody play Nintendo at a video arcade. They just stare. I'd watch a match like I was studying for a history test."About John McEnroe: "He was a very smart and observant tennis player. He was always aware of the dynamics of the match and was looking for ways to exploit your weaknesses."

I originally bought this books a few years back. I had mentioned it to my friend at time who said it was a waste of time to read it and I should just play my own game. Mind you this is the same guy that beats me evertime we play. Well I decided to purchase the kindle and audio version a few weeks back. I must say, I should have read this book years ago. I never really took into account the mental part of the game. I was a grinder and just pounded away on the courts and hope I would win. I now look at my opponents in a whole different light now. I play the mental game more than the physical. I now keep a notebook and make notes on my opponants. This book is must read. The irony of all this is that opponent that told me not to read the book was playing the mental game. Turns out he had read it and did not want me to get any advantage from reading the book. Let's just say after reading the book I have beat him on a number of occasions now.

Really good book about strategy and mental preparation not only for tennis but also for other single-player sports like racquetball, squash, golf, etc. I highly recommend it for players who are really interested in improving his/her game. My unique negative feeling is related to the fact that the first edition of the book was written about 1992 and all examples and comments are with players like McEnroe, Lendl, Becker, Sampras, Agassi (all of them are of course legends of the sport) but for readers of the 21th century examples discussing the strategies and styles used by Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, etc. would be more attractive. Any way, the basic principles still remain the same.

The ideas Brad Gilbert shares on how to improve the mental side of the game are both practical and challenging. The approach Brad recommends sound simple but require deep concentration and analytical thinking. Fortunately Brad has done much of the analysis to help in various real world situations. Our task is to assess the situation, and then execute these tactics effectively. That is much harder to do than say, of course. The entertaining real world stories and examples, while slightly dates, are timeless.

I just finished reading the books and have already started applying the lessons to my play...and it is working. Gilbert covers multiple aspects of the game from how to prepare for competition before you're even near a court to how to pack your bag to how to handle multiple situations while playing and maximize your strengths and capitalize on their weaknesses. I especially enjoyed the tips on how to change up the game when you are behind, keep focused under distraction, and deal with hookers, turtles, and pushers. I am currently a 3.0 tennis player so have allot learn from a club pro, but even so, his advice has already improved my play. In particular, I am better now at return of serve, lobs, and remembering to "get the ball earlier."The book was generally fun to read, well-written, and worth the time if you're looking to improve your game. I could see how his advice could be extremely valuable for a high level player or young person with allot of talent but not allot of strategy. I played racquetball for many years and this advice could have helped out allot!!!!! Finally, I loved the advice for the over 35 player and am remembering profilactic ibuprofen and Tiger Balm.

I started playing tennis at 33 years old. Get classes every week and really improved my technique and shots. I have played sports my whole live, so even though I started late in tennis, I manage to develop a descent style. However when it came to a match I always lose, sometimes with players I believe had worst technique than mine. I notice sometimes it took me up to a set (one I always lose) to get into the game, and then put some challenge in the second set.I started browsing the Internet for a book that could teach me strategy. I found "Winning Ugly", read the reviews and bought it! Even tough I am only in the 3rd chapter I felt results already. Yesterday I played a neighbor I had played two times in the past and lost with scores of 0-6, 1-6 / 1-6, 3-6, as I learned from this book I started preparing for the game early in my way driving back home. I analyzed last two games and set an strategy. The result was me winning by score of 6-1, 7-6 (5). I felt like a million bucks after the game!!!The interesting part of it is that my game is exactly the same, so as my opponent's game, but yesterday we played my way! I was able to impose my rhythm, my pace, and my shots... And it was all thanks to "Winning Ugly". I totally recommend it to starters, or recreational players that do not see their game level reflected in the court when they have a match. It is an easy reading by the way.

This is a good instructional book, and a great introduction to competitive tennis at the club level. It concentrates on the analytical side of the game. It's also a solid review for experienced players. Author Brad Gilbert looks beyond stroke technique, and concentrates on how to dissect match play. Audio version did the book justice.

In All Star Superman, Lex Luthor gives Superman a lethal dose of solar radiation, giving him only a few months too live. Superman sets off to perform his last tasks for humanity. This collection of stories shows Superman and his crew at their most heartwarming. Each of Superman's supporting cast gets a day in the limelight to show off what makes this series so good. I can definitely recommend this to any comics fan.

There's a lot of thought put into these stories, different facets of Superman over the last 75 years. It's 12 issues that are telling the ultimate Superman story from what makes Superman "Superman". Each chapter is a story harkening back to the various ages of Superman tales without feeling overtly gimmicky. Art changes styles depending on the mood of the story, I suppose, with some being more appealing than others. It's a lovely crash course on what has made Superman such a special comic book character, you don't have to be that familiar with him to find this collection accessible as it doesn't have a lot of baggage and lays adequate foundation for what is there without feeling bogged down. That said, the story gets halfway through and lost a step, it gets to this Bizarro world as the underworld thing that takes 2 issues and disconnects from the unique cleverness and personality that is the main character, he becomes just "guy in trouble solving things to get home"-man and it's not compelling. Afterwards, it feels like the rest of the story is hurried from chapter to chapter, and while it's ultimately a fairly satisfying conclusion, it never gets that step back all the way. In fact, the DC Animated movie based on All-Star Superman ends up working better on several levels than the comic, but the movie does forgo a very emotionally-important story as well.I would definitely recommend this to a lot of comic book fans, especially light fans who have some pop culture familiarity with Superman but aren't major fans and don't want to commit to an ongoing title.

This is an interesting take on the character. However, it really has too quick of a pace to really contemplate the effects that death would have on a character so pure and deathless. There are very few emotional stakes for Superman throughout this book, which is one of the key factors for why people don't find him as compelling a character. However, it is inventive and reverent to previous Superman storylines. I am both pleased and let down by this book.

There are so many positive reviews, so I am going to simply emphasize how certainly satisfying this wonderful collection is.The stories are not quite chronologically laid out, so be patient if you get confused or need to flip back--the overall narrative will eventually make sense and seemingly unexplained threads will be explained! After reading this (or before, it doesn't really matter), do check out DC One Million. You will appreciate the interwoven story arcs/threads Grant Morrison weaves between that series and All Star. Finally, this has a lot of re-reading value, so do check it out or buy it! Oh, I almost forgot to mention: the artwork is amazing, and you will know what I mean if you are a Quitely fan. If not, you may very well become a Quitely fan after reading this!

I firmly believe any comic book writer wanting to write for Superman should be required to read All-Star Superman. It captures pretty much everything we love about Superman as a character, his incredible power, his kind heart, and his never failing drive to help everyone around him. It reminds us that he's not some overpowered, muscle head who just smashes bad guys, he's everything we aspire to be, not in terms of power, but in intelligence, kindness, and dignity. I don't think every story presented in this book is perfect, particularly the planet of the Bizarros story, but there are far more hits than misses. A must-have for any Superman fan and a good one for any comic book fan wanting something a bit more touching than your usual comic book story.

Love how it taps into Silver Age Superman mythos. Well written and nice art. Stopped buying comics around 90s gimmicks like death of Superman, Superman’s new powers, Batman’s broken back. This one is excellent and looks great with my ipad kindle app.

Grant Morrison is definitely one of the greatest writers of his generation, but his take on Superman is truly phenomenal. When you have someone who can always out strength/speed/think anyone, giving him a story where he's dying shakes that foundation. This Superman is introspective, and his emotions come out in these pages in a way I've never seen before. Truly one of the greatest Superman stories of all time.

This was informative, well written, and well illustrated. It was perfect to assist my kindergarten age son with his report for school.

Good for school projects.

Well written and the art is excellent. I read it to my students for African American Month.

I am an elementary school music teacher & I ordered this book for my classroom. When I read through it upon receiving my order I was immediately impressed! The art work is amazing & the story is very child friendly. You will be pleased with this book as a parent or teacher. It is a wonderful resource!

Book was in excellent condition!

Great book. Taught my son quite a bit and helped with his 1st grade project.

My four year old loves music and I’m starting to teach him to play piano, so this book was a natural fit. His comprehension is good, so getting a book that is K and up didn't phase me. We read this book after reading (and listening to) Jazz Fly a few times, so my son insisted on listening to music while we read it. I got an album of Duke Ellington’s greatest hits and played that in the background while I read him this story. The illustrations were great and my son enjoyed it, but I think he was a little lost on some of the language since there was a lot of (old) slang. For that reason, I think the minimum age on this really should be around first grade. Even then, an adult would probably need to explain what some of the phrases meant. We got it from the library, so we might try it again in another year or so.

Duke Ellington: the Piano Prince and His Orchestra is a brief biography of Duke Ellington, the great jazz pianist and orchestra leader. It only mentions the happy, good events in Ellington's life and seems intended to spark an interest in jazz music in general, and Ellington in particular.Mrs. Pinkey writes in vernacular, dropping the"-ing", talking directly to the reader and using slang from the jazz era. This gives the book a quick rhythm, a jazzy feel, and makes it a joy to read aloud. Her metaphors for the music are colorful and descriptive, at times poetic.Mr. Pinkney uses bright colors and bold lines to express the feeling of music being played. The colors add to the jazzy, joyful rhythm of the words. The texture from the scratch-board technique gives depth to the illustrations. The bold, curving lines propel the eye around the page, following the drawn music. Overall, the art gives the impression of movement, vitality and most of all, of music. The intended audience is preschool age up to around age 8. This is too dense of a book, both in amount of words and amount of story covered, to be appropriate for a typical four year old. On the other hand, it is such a lively book to read out loud, it might hold a preschooler's attention despite a disinterest in and lack of understanding about the subject. For the school age child, I don't think it would be an appropriate read-alone book, for the reason mentioned above but also because many of the slang words will need an explanation.

Thought it would have more of a side by side comparison that would help me transition but did not have that format. Ended up only using it twice and now on the shelf.

The book is a big help for any long time Windows user to have a less painful transition to a new operating system and hardware.

Ok

Good book

thought it would guide a pc user through the differences of the mac, more of a sales manual for mac features

I finally switched to a Mac from my Windows PCs after 30 years of frustrating crashes and hang-ups won. The Mac help topics and tutorials were, at best, difficult to find. Several other Dummies books have been helpful. This book was pretty useless except for 10 pages or so. All I wanted was a brief explanation of how to change a cursor, set up bookmarks folders, have screen displays in a somewhat consistent format, set up browsing tabs. I thought that this would be addressed in this book and a couple of hours was all I needed for a few basics. I have figured out everything I wanted, but only through trial and error and various tutorial websites. The topics weren't addressed in the book.Fifteen hours searching for help vs. a maximum of two hours from the book? The book is a waste of time and money.

Made the transition easier but needs to be updated.

Being new to the Mac OS X system I learned a lot of useful information from this publication that I have been able to use already.
