This book is a great source of Practice problems for the AM breadth exam of the NCEES PE Civil Engineering exam. Most of the material out there (PPI) has problems far more difficult and time consuming that you are likely to encounter, not the case here. The difficulty of these problems is at least on par with the problems in the NCEES Practice exams. The problem with the NCEES practice exams is lack of problem diversity. If you compare old editions of it they don't vary much. That's where this book stands out.Be sure to register your book to get the full expanse of their content. This will get you hundreds more problems, and allow you to do timed practice exams and also focus on certain topics to shore up weaknesses. All at a price far better than PPI.Create an account and then send them a message including your Amazon Order # to receive membership to their site as well. This book was well worth the purchase. I spent a good amount of time reading reviews of the available PE practice exam books and almost every book available has mediocre reviews, often citing needlessly difficult problems that are riddled with errors and typos. I can confirm that neither of those common complaints apply to this book.I started working on the problems with this book immediately after finishing Goswami's two breadth practice exam book, which I found to be frustrating at times due to overly long and complicated problems that would be difficult to solve in the six minute average window. While over preparing by practicing on problems that are more difficult than the actual exam isn't a bad idea, if you did get stuck on a problem in that book, the bare bones solution section was likely to be of little help to clear up your confusion.By comparison, the problems in this book were noticeably easier on average than Goswami's exam. I have yet to take the actual PE Exam or the official NCEES Practice Exam I've ordered, but I am expecting the difficulty level of this book to be on par with the actual breadth exam quesitons. The solutions in this book are all broken down with easy to follow steps, and even the qualitative questions contain solutions that are explained in detail. I can only recall encountering one small error/typo thoughout the course of both exams, and it in no way created any confusion. Registering the book through their website also grants you access to some of the online resources they offer on their website.All in all it's a very reasonable price for two well written breadth exams that match the current exam specifications, while also providing thorough solutions, and additional online resources. Given the absurd prices for all of the reference materials needed for the exam, it was a nice surprise to feel like I actually got my money's worth for once.

I have heard from people that the best practice questions came from the official NCEES practice exam. I thought that the questions from this book were about the same level of difficulty as that. It did seem like they copied a bunch of questions from the NCEES practice exam and just changed some numbers.I liked the book enough that I got a membership to their website. I was utterly disappointed that lots of questions from their website were the same as in the book. I contacted them about getting a refund for the membership to their website and they promptly refunded my money and told me that the book contains instructions for registering with the website for free.

This is a great review book to add to your practice repertoire. Very good difficulty on the problems as well as some twists thrown in. Also, a few nice bonus offers from the author. Great value.

This book was very similar to the civil section practice book you can get from NCEES. However, the actual civil portion of the test was insanely hard and I felt completely lost through most of it. But I ultimately passed, so I'm going to give this book 4 stars anyway. I think it could use some more conceptual problems and some that are more challenging.

I am really impressed with this book and more so, the support materials on their website. Registering the book was a bit confusing, but as the other reviews say, use the "contact us" form on their website.The online material consists of even more practice problems as well as timed tests and topic specific quizzes to pinpoint your weak points. Definitely worth the $50! I wish I hadn't wasted the $100 in renting the Companion to the CERM which has way too in depth questions that are not aren't even formatted like the the test (i.e. multiple part problems involving data lookup and some calculus).

I really love this book so far. The work is grounded in real psychology and draws heavily from The Attachment Handbook and major Attachment Theory publications over the last 50 years since Bowlby and Ainsworth. It was recommended to me by a lovely marriage and family therapist (LMFT) who was using it herself. It really has benefited me in the short two weeks I've had it more than just about any other Bible Study or self-help book. It is Christian focused, but aside from the statements of Faith and Truth, looking into your past and your memories and touching on what is underneath the pain and miscommunications, anger and shame we experience with those closest to us who we love deeply, yet as they say in the book, we often dance the wrong steps and step on toes (sometimes our own) and trip up in relationship. Learning a "new dance" will benefit your ability to love, see, hear, and connect with your partner and family. I'm convinced it can and will help you in every part of your daily life if you are willing to make the effort to see your part in the problem. It has helped me with a lot of my preconceived notions and given me a lot more empathy. It has helped me see what tender emotions are underneath that anger. I would recommend it for adults in relationship or who are "single". Be warned: The work in this book is very difficult and you will find internal resistance. For me that means it is working towards the good stuff and provides hope that real change is possible.

Nothing wrong with it, but I returned it because the book has the workbook built in which I didn't notice until they arrived. It was simply an unnecessary purchase for which they were great about refunding.

This book can truly be a game changer in a marriage. Between this book and also listening to the excellent MP3s on the authors' website, I can't begin to describe how much the work of these authors has impacted my marriage in a life-changing way. So often marriages get stuck in unhealthy patterns of interaction, and couples have no idea why or how to break out of these patterns. This material gave my husband and me tremendous insight into ourselves individually and also into our interaction as a couple that's had an amazing impact on our marriage. Terrific material, especially if you combine it with the MP3s. Thank you, Kay and Milan, for your vulnerability in sharing from your lives and your work to get this information out there so other couples can benefit.

This book should be required reading starting at 18 years old. It explains what your attachment style is in your relationships. Once you know this and your partners you can easily explain your relationship issues. It is very good and if you are struggling I recommend it. Everyone should know their partners love style and attachment style well before getting married or living together

I do couples counseling and I use this book all the time. This book helps me to identify different peoples love styles and how they work together to create certain patterns. It also lays out a plan for overcoming this pattern through self-awareness, engaging, and comforting. I love the workbook and the exercises to help with self-awareness and the growth goals. I learned a lot about myself and my husband with this book as well. This one is a winner for sure and the workshops they do are fabulous as well.

The book and workbook are great. In fact I loved this so much we have the authors coming to our town to put on the seminar. If people would put their concept into practice, and make marriage more about the other person and less about ourselves, I think most marriages would be saved from divorce.

Excellent book for understanding where the problem areas of marriage might originate. Deep, insightful, and easy to read. "Listening in" on the counseling sessions was very helpful. This book and book on CD gave me deep insights and areas I can work on and grow in. Highly recommend this!

Q&A with Charles Duhigg Q. What sparked your interest in habits? A. I first became interested in the science of habits eight years ago, as a newspaper reporter in Baghdad, when I heard about an army major conducting an experiment in a small town named Kufa. The major had analyzed videotapes of riots and had found that violence was often preceded by a crowd of Iraqis gathering in a plaza and, over the course of hours, growing in size. Food vendors would show up, as well as spectators. Then, someone would throw a rock or a bottle. When the major met with Kufa’s mayor, he made an odd request: Could they keep food vendors out of the plazas? Sure, the mayor said. A few weeks later, a small crowd gathered near the Great Mosque of Kufa. It grew in size. Some people started chanting angry slogans. At dusk, the crowd started getting restless and hungry. People looked for the kebab sellers normally filling the plaza, but there were none to be found. The spectators left. The chanters became dispirited. By 8 p.m., everyone was gone. I asked the major how he had figured out that removing food vendors would change peoples' behavior. The U.S. military, he told me, is one of the biggest habit-formation experiments in history. “Understanding habits is the most important thing I’ve learned in the army,” he said. By the time I got back to the U.S., I was hooked on the topic. Q. How have your own habits changed as a result of writing this book? A. Since starting work on this book, I've lost about 30 pounds, I run every other morning (I'm training for the NY Marathon later this year), and I'm much more productive. And the reason why is because I've learned to diagnose my habits, and how to change them. Take, for instance, a bad habit I had of eating a cookie every afternoon. By learning how to analyze my habit, I figured out that the reason I walked to the cafeteria each day wasn't because I was craving a chocolate chip cookie. It was because I was craving socialization, the company of talking to my colleagues while munching. That was the habit's real reward. And the cue for my behavior - the trigger that caused me to automatically stand up and wander to the cafeteria, was a certain time of day. So, I reconstructed the habit: now, at about 3:30 each day, I absentmindedly stand up from my desk, look around for someone to talk with, and then gossip for about 10 minutes. I don't even think about it at this point. It's automatic. It's a habit. I haven't had a cookie in six months. Q. What was the most surprising use of habits that you uncovered? A. The most surprising thing I've learned is how companies use the science of habit formation to study - and influence - what we buy. Take, for example, Target, the giant retailer. Target collects all kinds of data on every shopper it can, including whether you’re married and have kids, which part of town you live in, how much money you earn, if you've moved recently, the websites you visit. And with that information, it tries to diagnose each consumer’s unique, individual habits. Why? Because Target knows that there are these certain moments when our habits become flexible. When we buy a new house, for instance, or get married or have a baby, our shopping habits are in flux. A well-timed coupon or advertisement can convince us to buy in a whole new way. But figuring out when someone is buying a house or getting married or having a baby is tough. And if you send the advertisement after the wedding or the baby arrives, it’s usually too late. So Target studies our habits to see if they can predict major life events. And the company is very, very successful. Oftentimes, they know what is going on in someone's life better than that person's parents.

Awesome book! For anyone looking to change some habits or make new habits this book will definitely help. Has a lot of other good details and research about habits and more that are very interesting and a good read in general as well.

Two halves coexist within this book’s covers. One is outstanding; the other is a bit sloppy. Part one is the heart of the book; it explains what habits are about, where they come from, how they’re hard-wired into our brains, and how they can be enormously powerful —both to enslave us and to free us if we only we learn how to handle them well (the book’s mission). I found this part of the book to be truly outstanding: well-researched, engagingly written and extremely persuasive. It combines scientific research, personal life-stories and journalistic interviews to great effect.While the 1st part is circumscribed to the individual level of analysis, on parts 2 and 3 the author takes the analysis from the micro to organizations (meso-level) and societies (macro-level). The author describes “the power of weak ties” of social networks, and claims that it helps understand the rise of social movements —which it clearly does. But in his explanation, networks are rebranded as “the habit of peer pressure”. Networks —as well as peer pressure, or culture— can be powerful forces for change, undoubtedly. But networks are not habits —as per his own definition. Different phenomena are conflated into the concept of habits, and in doing so the concept loses elegance and consistency.Intellectually, the book is revealing. On a personal level, it is incredibly useful —and I’m thankful to the author for writing it. I would have limited the book claims to the phenomena it can explain beyond any reasonable doubt. By taking the concept of habits beyond what it can solidly explain, parts 2 & 3 detract a bit of value and credibility from the book. Were it not for that, I would have given 5 stars to the book. In balance, this is still a great book that --with the caveat expressed-- I strongly recommend.

I really wanted to like this book...But what I wanted more than that were clear and concrete tactics or strategies to "hack" my habits...Strategies and tactics that were groundbreaking, clear, repeatable, and effectively "life changing"...Nope. Not so much.I grade content quality by number of under-linings, margin notes, and folded pages I've set at the end of the read...It scored extremely low in all of those categories. So it's not particular dense with usefulness.A few other things I didn't like...This book is 95% story, or anecdote. I'm not really into stories. I'd read a novel for a story. I read non-fiction to learn something useful- and prefer to do it quickly.The stories themselves are delivered non-sequentially...For example:story A beginningstory B beginningstory C beginningStory D beginningTo understand story A we need to story B. To understand story B we need story C. To understand story C we need story D.Then story A's middle or endingThen story B's middle or endingThen story C's middle or endingThen story D's middle or endingIt might be interesting to write this way, but it's an irritating read. Who wants their thought sequences disparate like this?This distracting structure could have been redeemed if there were meaningful conclusions or anything actionable amidst the mire.But there was not.Overall, is it worth reading? Yes...if you have nothing else very interesting to read.

Duhigg explores what science has to teach us about how habits are formed, how they function, how they can be modified and how they influence our lives and our business world. The book is divided into three parts: The Habits of Individuals, The Habits of Successful Organizations, and the Habits of Societies.Based on studies of animal behavior and human behavior, we (that is rats, monkeys and humans) form habits the same way. There is a cue of some kind that triggers a habit, followed by some form of routine that has been completed memorized and operates more or less automatically, followed by some form of reward that reinforces the habit. Whether it is buckling our seat belt, brushing out teeth, smoking a cigarette or using heroin, this same habit loop operates in all of us.The brain creates habits because it simplifies our activities. If we had to consciously decide and think out everything we do every day throughout the day from scratch it would be overwhelming for the brain. Habits are little routines that automate aspects of our behavior. We are not usually conscious that the habit is being formed, and once it is in place we need not expend much thought to follow it. It is a very effective efficiency that our minds use to free us up to think about other things.Since we now know how a habit is formed and how they function we can modify existing habits and create new ones. We must identify the right cue which leads to the desired routine which is then followed by the reward. We must know in advance, or expect, the reward to motivate us to engage in the routine. The reward generates endorphins in the brain which are powerful motivators. They motivate us to repeat the routine every time the cue occurs. It is a bit more complex than that, but that is the gist of it.Duhigg goes on to explain in fascinating detail how studies have shown us how we can modify a habit and how to replace one habit with another. This is very important because we can learn from it how to replace a bad habit (smoking) with a good one (exercise).Certain habits also develop in organizations and in societies and they come together to create a culture, whether it is the culture of a corporation or the culture of a society. Culture, it seems, is primarily driven by key habits.What I found useful about this book:This book helps us understand how habits are formed and how we can use them to our benefit, change them when we need to and replace them when necessary. Duhigg does warn the reader that although we understand the way habits are made and altered it is not always easy to do it. Determining the actual cue for example can take some experimentation and work.Readability/Writing Quality:The book is very well written. It is engaging. It contains lots of references to studies and science but not in a dry or boring way. It is a series of fascinating stories.
