Take Star Wars, mix in Hunger Games, Cannonball Run, and add a dash of Star Trek and you end up with Marvel's Han Solo series. The book is set shortly after the events of the original Star Wars movie. The rebellion is in need of key information and have a network of spies in place that have gathered it. Unfortunately, someone else seems to know about the spies and they are being picked off one-by-one. The rebels need to exfiltrate these key intelligence assets and Leia turns to Han Solo to carry out the mission. Solo is initially reluctant, but folds to the Princess's demands. In addition to his obvious attraction to Leia, he's intrigued by the mission which entails participating in the Dragon Void, the galaxy's most well-known race which draws the most elite pilots to participate. The race requires not only piloting skill but also the ability to work through obstacles and traps set up by the race designers, and features rest stops at three different planets where Han and Chewbacca are supposed to pick up three different members of the spy network. Han and Chewie must navigate the Dragon Void, find the spies during the short breaks for refueling, deal with many of the other opportunistic racers and determine if one of the Rebel's spies is actually a double agent. With already a full plate on their hands, things get worse when the Empire shows up to try to close the race down.Marjorie Liu puts together an amazing story that feels like an accurate depiction of the characters. Additionally, the art team for the book is stellar. Mark Brooks and Dexter Vines do a fantastic job of illustrating the work -- his style is fairly realistic, so the characters look as they do in the films. Additionally, though, they puts panels together well in a way that enhances and conveys the action of the story. Sonia Oback handles coloring which is very vibrant and adds to the realism of the art. In addition to the story art, Marvel had Lee Bermejo create various covers for the individual issues/chapters, all of which are fantastic.Overall, this is an excellent read and perhaps the best Marvel Star Wars series I've read so far. Easily five stars.

If the trouble-plagued "Young Han Solo" film proves an artistic failure, "Star Wars" fans will always have this collected edition of Marvel's five-issue Han Solo miniseries to fall back on.Writer Marjorie Brooks builds Solo's solo adventure around elements which "Star Trek" fans will find familiar: a starship race (used in both an Original Series novel and a "Voyager" episode) and a wormhole to other parts of the galaxy (the foundation of "Deep Space Nine"), then adds espionage elements to construct a "Star Wars"-specific good guys vs. bad guys adventure that's as exciting as anything George Lucas' franchise has ever put on film. Her story, set between Episodes IV and V-but shortly before V, based on artist Mark Brooks' depictions of Han and Princess Leia-finds Solo taking a break from the Rebellion to return to smuggling and pay his debt to Jabba the Hutt. But his respite's short-lived, as Leia needs him for an undercover mission-to retrieve three informants who've obtained information the Rebels need-and at the same time ferret out a mole who's murdered other Rebel informants in the network. His cover's as a participant in the Dragon Void-the galaxy's largest, and most infamous, starship race. Leia reminds Han that winning the race is not his objective. But Han wouldn't be Han-and Brooks wouldn't have a story-if Han obeyed orders and put his assignment first. And, of course, we wouldn't really have a "Star Wars" tale if the Empire didn't arrive on the scene, determined to stop both the race-and the informants. Brooks bookends her story with the same flirtatious Han-Leia bickering seen in "The Empire Strikes Back," with no new or different nuances. Both the dialogue and the characterizations ring true throughout-readers can hear both Harrison Ford's and Carrie Fisher's voices in their heads-with one notable exception. Late in the book, Han describes himself as "a nobody. Just a pilot. A darn good pilot, but nothing special." To me, that doesn't ring at all true because it doesn't jibe with the Han Solo that I saw in four films. The Han I saw would have a much higher opinion of both himself and his abilities.Brooks' artwork is perfectly in keeping with the photorealistic style of art Al Williamson long ago established in Marvel's "ESB" adaptation. Established characters, ships and hardware are exactly as we've seen them on screen. And new aliens and ships look like they came from the films. In addition, he gives the book a visual richness equal to the movies. The cantina in which Han's trying to drum up business at the beginning is populated with weird creatures that would be the centerpiece of lesser comics. And the Dragon Void race is as amazing as any outer space battle seen in any of the films."Star Wars: Han Solo" may be built from prefabricated parts, but it's still fun, entertaining comics reading that's also a feast for the eyes.

Marvel has dedicated several short series to several Star Wars heroes. The one focusing on Leia is mediocre. The one focusing on Lando, and the one focusing on Chewbacca, are both quite good. C-3PO was given a single issue story that is well worth the read. This book--the one focusing on Han Solo--just blows the doors off my expectation. I was hoping that it would be good. It is that, and much more. The art is amazing. The atmosphere of the book is very "Star Wars". It makes me feel like I'm watching a new Star Wars movie. I can hear Harrison Ford saying the lines that Han Solo speaks--the writing is spot-on.You are going to want to get this one.

Review

‘This book truly is the definitive history of the Lord of the Rings films. Nearly every single element of the productions is coverd here, from writing, to shooting, to Oscar-night jitters. Nathan’s prose does exactly what you want from a book like this: it makes you feel as if you’re really there.’SlashFilm‘In breezy and often cheeky prose, Nathan tells a grand story worthy of the annals of great filmmaking… there is much to learn, to chuckle over and to admire as Jackson and his band of indefatigable Kiwis face down the naysayers.’Daily Mail

I'm a big fan of Peter Jackson, and I've probably watched the behind the scenes appendices of the LOTR, The Hobbit and King Kong more often that I've watched the actual movies. It's made me wish I were a lot younger so I could go to New Zealand and try and get a job in the movies down there. Given that, it was nice to see that I could still learn some new things from this book. However, I found the tone of the writing annoying. The author obviously thinks Peter Jackson is a genius, which is fine, but often this book comes across as a hagiography. Everything is filtered through this lens of PJ unable to do wrong, every idea, every contribution made by others, every single conceivable positive development is traced back to PJ being unerring and a complete monumental visionary. Even mistakes are twisted to be part of some greater overall genius plan. There is also a curious part involving the Hobbit where Jackson states that it was his idea to make it into three movies, but only recently it was also reported that he did NOT want to make three, but was pressured by the studio, leaving him with no time to adequately prepare for them leading to a lot of problems. That's all pretty much glossed over in this book. The author also injects himself far too often. He was apparently invited down the NZ several times during the production. This is fine, but I feel the book would be better served if it weren't done in such a biased manner. I would use the J.W. Rinzler "Making of Star Wars" books as an example of something like this but done much better. Using photos and materials from Lucasfilm's archives instead of photos of the author trying on props. A decent book, not a ton of new info if you've watched the behind the scenes material (something that I think PJ actually does do better than any other filmmaker) but worth a read. Maybe someday someone will put out a more objective telling of these stories.

This is a great book, but he really screwed up Luke Evan's name, and didn't mention Lee Pace or Thranduil at all! I loved all the in-depth stuff about the making of the Lord of the Rings, but he scurries through the making of the Hobbit and he makes it plain he doesn't think much of the second trilogy, which disappoints me.He also screwed up the name of the actor playing Bard - it's "Luke Evans," NOT Lee Evans!

I first read the LOTR books in the seventies and loved them. I personally feel that the movies are actually better than the books, and thus really enjoyed reading this in depth behind the scenes account of all that went into those films. They remain my favorites and I encourage anyone interested to go to New Zealand as I did, and experience that wonderful country for yourselves (I didn't go to hobbiton, etc, while there, just enjoyed the people and the scenery). If you really loved the films (and I rank them amongst the best films ever made), you will thoroughly enjoy this book, (which delves into everything from it's difficult beginnings, choosing the characters and locations, etc. )

I loved this book. The author does a fantastic job of taking you through the process of creating these monumental movies right along with Jackson and the crew. Highly recommended.

First third to nearly halfway of this book gives in depth detail that, though informative, could have been slimmed down considerably. It does give a lot of interesting detail regarding the actors, their individual efforts in achieving their performances, and also affirms the amazing talents of Peter Jackson.

If you love The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. However, I was amazed at the number of incomplete sentences and other grammatical errors in the book and that is why I gave it four stars instead of five. I would not expect a long-established publishing house like HarperCollins to do such a poor job of editing.

Tolkien fan - I was surprised to find this book has as many pages as my LOTR book. I'm not too far into it yet but I'm enjoying reading it.

I certainly haven't read this book cover to cover, but I keep it around and read page or two when the mood strikes me. That's how long a typical explanation for something takes. The few things I've read have been very clear and understandable, and reflect in-depth knowledge by the author(s). I contracted tick-borne Lyme Disease a couple years ago and was in ICU for two weeks, yet I learned more about the transmission of that disease from a page or two in this book than I knew from all my prior reading and talking with doctors. The book covers a remarkably broad spectrum of health issues that are both every day life (ie: tooth problems) and outdoor/survival related (ie: toxic plants). You can jump right into any one that interests you without reading a lot of stuff that doesn't. It's also pretty well illustrated where an illustration is helpful to understand the explanation. Not going to win any awards for artistic quality, but definitely helpful. Reminiscent of my very old Boy Scout handbook .... which I still keep around. I actually can't imagine a better book that isn't something huge and expensive like the Mayo Clinic Health book. This thing is compact and densely packed with good information.

Good insights on some emergency planning and medical basics. When things go south, remembering details from that trauma or survival class you took may be a little hard to surface through the panic; This is a great way to make sure you have that knowledge readily available. Interesting section on stockpiling meds. Almost worth it for that alone

This is a really good book from a doctor who understands that the grid may go down for a long time, not just for a few days or even weeks. Most medical survival books are oriented to stabilizing a person long enough to get them to the hospital. But what happens in a SHTF scenario that may be prolonged? This MD does a great job outlining steps you can take to prepare now, while society functions, and also providing insights on what people can do to make the best of a difficult situation when professional medical care, and medicine, is not available, and won't be for the foreseeable future. After reading this, I am going to have to order his more comprehensive book as well.

Best book so far out of 4 I've purchased for SHTF medicine. I still wanted more "how to" but I guess that would put it at around 800 pages. Overall, a very good primer on what you may need with materials list and what to expect.

Most is common sense and basic first aid. Not what I consider "ultimate" and not a medical "Bible". Go to feds and get medical surgury book, its this book on roids.

As a former SAR Medic, I found this to be an excellent review with several updated "hints and ideas" that made this purchase worthwhile

I have collected a few books on "medicine in the rough", but this one is by far my favorite. Dr. Alton's descriptions are well-phrased, and he lists many possible scenarios and how to handle them as best you can with what you have. If you can only afford one or two books on the subject, this would be a top choice to have. I recommend checking him and nurse Amy out on Facebook and YouTube, and bookmark their website--valuable information for free!

This book is now in my Survival supplies. It is full of practical instructions on how to make due when dealing with medical emergencies in the field.
