This concise and easy to read book is essentialy a crash course in single particle reconstruction by electron microscopy. It isn't exactly a how-to manual, more an overview of how the whole process works. Thus, it is useful not only to someone who wants to learn how to do this, but also to those who might be interested in deciding if this technique would be useful to them. And actually, the whole topic is sufficiently cool that I would recommend the book even to people who know they will never use this technique, just because its fun to read about it. The book is clearly written and doesn't assume alot of prior knowledge. A basic undergrad education in math would be enough to handle the equations.

The author is one of the inventors of this technique. And he also won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 2017 because of his contribution in Cryo-EM. So it absolutely worth to read it.

Maps are nice. The excursions (near by places) and park information (camping, lodging, etc) are listed as filler and so vague it shouldn't even be listed in the book. For example in Shenandoah NP, they list a VA state park 320 miles away near Cumberland Gap NHP. In Great Smoky Mountains NP the Laurel Falls trail isn't even listed, while this is an extremely popular trail, it is still a must see. Reading through the book, I get the impression the writers are trying to move people away from the must sees and popular areas to round about trails and less popular sites in the parks. This is fine, but by not including everything, the readers are at a disservice. The layout of the previous version was much better and contained more worth while information to get a better picture of each park.

My wife and I just returned from a month long, 7500 mile road trip which include visits to nine major national parks. We have never been to a national park before and were eager to get our hands on a comprehensive source of information for the parks we planned to visit. This book fit the bill perfectly!Here's how we utilized it: As I drove to the next park along our route, my wife would read aloud that parks entry from the book. Each entry includes interesting details about the park's history, the most popular features/sites, and the best way to visit the park. The entry also includes a fairly detailed map of the park. As my wife read, she would make marks on the map, highlighting the places we would visit. Once we arrived at the park we had all of our stops planned out and ready to go!Why not just use the internet? In many of the parks and surrounding areas there was little to no cell coverage. Parts of Montana, Wyoming, and various other states just aren't covered. This book serves as a great fill-in. Obviously, it isn't as comprehensive as the web, but it provided us with all the information we needed to have enjoyable visits and all 9 parks we toured.

If you're looking for info specifically on camping in the National Parks, this isn't the book for you. It's more of an overview or someone's first book on the NP's. I highly recommend "Your Guide to the National Parks" by Michael Joseph Oswald if you're looking for in depth information on camping, other lodging, activities, and trip ideas to see more than one NP in a trip.

Enjoy researching the parks as we are on a lifelong journey to visit all national parks. Good information but sometimes it is a bit light on type of information we wanted. As we typically donâ€™t stay in the parks but travel with our tow vehicle we really didnâ€™t need camping information...who knows that may change. Good pictures and nice to have compact reference manual as we drive to the park.

Had the opportunity to look through this and the Lonely Planets Guide before selecting this book. I found the NG's version had more listing for "things to see" and more detail on the park and especially camping information. I felt this had more of the information I wanted. No pull out map like Lonely Planet but does include a map for each park in the content.

I was expecting there will be many photograph in the book since it's published by NG. Yet I got barely no photos and the description is very short. I bought Lonely plane at the same time and the LP is better

Good informative book to have for traveling. Great photos. Nice size to take along, not too big or bulky. Book arrived within the allotted time frame and was well packaged. Good pricing on Amazon.

This is just an awesome book! Everyone I show it to wants one. We took it with us on our recent trek to 3 Southwest National Parks (Great Basin, Bryce and Zion) and it was spot on in terms of locations, best things to do and general information to make the most out of our short visits to the parks. This is really just a great book and it is now one of the most important books I have since I want to start visiting more National Parks.

About the Author

Dakpo Tashi Namgyal (1513–1587) was the first recognized reincarnation of Gampopa and an important master of the Dakpo Kagyu tradition. This was the most thorough and well organized Costa Rican travel guide that I purchased and was also the only one I referenced during my five-week trip. In addition to the abundance of information on hotels, hostels, regions, national parks, restaurants, etc., the most valuable component of this guide (for me anyway) were the bus schedules. Every other guide I looked through didn't have nearly as much information about schedules, routes, alternative routes, etc., and this information alone facilitated much more seamless travel days. Although the information wasn't always accurate due to terminals changing names/locations, bus companies discontinuing certain services, etc., the schedules printed in the book sometimes served as a general blueprint for the public transportation system, which was helpful in and of itself.

I'm a week into my stay in Costa Rica, and the guide has been helpful and accurate in general. Navigating the links to various topics is not always easy, though. The most frustrating thing I've found is that the pages at the end (about the last 5% of the ebook) have not properly downloaded. Formatting is scrambled up, and instead of advancing the same page will re-load time after time. That section deals with language and local expressions, so it would be a great help if only it workedW!

This was the best of all of the guide books and I checked out all of them! We used it every day and were really pleased with the recommendations.

This is best reflected in Stewart Green's hefty guide, which weighs in at a whopping 537 pages. Green has indeed taken an admirable stab at rounding up descriptions, photos, and beta for every route worth mentioning. He takes the reader from the remote corners of Castle Valley and the Island in the sky to the oft-traveled crags of Salt Lake's Little and Big Cottonwood canyons. Route descriptions are thorough and easily understood. More importantly, most of the route maps are superimposed over actual photographs to insure that readers actually find the walls they are after. Green emphasizes the use of clean aid techniques and doesn't include routes that don't take clean aid. This is admirable and is aimed at protecting the soft rock of some of the desert climbs.

This book has great information and pictures I can't wait for the snow to melt and I can go out there and play!

I got this book because my family is planning a climbing trip in Moab, Utah this Spring. Although I haven't really used it, I know it will be a great resource for us as we find good spots to climb when we vacation down there.

Good overview of routes and areas- For more details on specific areas, I would buy other guidebooks. Bought the RC Arizona used-like new and it was cheaper and like new.

The state of Utah offers an incredible amount of fabulous rock climbing routes on a diverse spectrum of rocks, and Stewart Greene has carefully documented a major portion of them. The descriptions, photos, and maps are excellent, and he also includes equipment recommendations and climbing history. Some of the very popular areas may have superior documentation, but this is a great general guide to the state, and will give the purchaser a long list of incredible projects. I have been playing piano for many years now, but was interested in using this book as a reference to some easy classics and additional teaching techniques for some of my current piano students. The videos included in the eBook make it super easy to read the information and then see the demonstration. I was glad to see Damon's focus on identifying and practicing patterns in music to assist in learning more quickly. For those who learn best by reading, he includes many tidbits about the history of the pieces and the meanings of some of the terms used in musical notation. For those who prefer learning by doing (kinetically) the videos are a great way to learn the techniques. And for those who learn through listening, many of the pieces have recorded files of the end result. Overall I think it is a great resource to work through with an instructor or by yourself for a very self-motivated person who wants to learn. It is a great value, as this book, if used for lessons could fill a student's curriculum for years. I'll be honest, I am not entirely a beginner. I took five years of piano grudgingly as a child, though I rarely practiced when my parents didn't have time to look in on me. After having stopped though, I often miss the instrument, which is why I picked up this book. I skimmed over the first few chapters on reading notes to focus mainly on learning how to play new pieces. On this, Ferrante's book does surprisingly well. The provided MP3 files serve as a guideline as to how each piece is supposed to sound, a sort of substitute for what traditionally is a piano teacher playing out the song for you. The little notes written into the sheet music were also helpful and went into a great deal of technical music terms that I had all but forgotten. I probably got less out of this as a slightly more experienced piano player, but it was quite helpful in reviewing techniques and the basic ground knowledge of piano that's often forgotten through the years. This book would be unsuitable for a more intermediate piano player, but as a former piano slacker who suddenly regrets not sticking with the instrument, this book was a lovely reintroduction.

Damon Ferranteâ€™s Beginner Classical Piano Music is a great way for an aspiring pianist to learn the fundamentals of the piano. The book starts with basic finger exercises that allow the student to get familiar with correct hand positioning and posture. In the process, the students will become familiar with simple time signatures, intervals, and the location of the musical notes on the piano. The book then progresses into an in-depth lesson on the interworkings of musical notation and its correspondence with the musical staff. While learning the basics of musical theory for the piano, the student will also perform exercises with a metronome to strengthen his or her fingers and keep a steady timing. These basics will fully prepare the student for the familiar musical scores that lie ahead. I am a fan of the use of real piano pieces throughout the course of the book to keep the students interest. Who wouldnâ€™t want to play pieces including Pachelbelâ€™s Canon, Beethoven's Fur Elise, or Tchaikovskyâ€™s Dance of the Mirlitons from the Nutcracker? I also like the amount of detail for each used in each lesson every step of the way. The videos are the biggest bonus as I am a fan of visual learning, and I feel if a student gets stuck or doesnâ€™t fully understand how to interpret a passage at first, they can look to the video for advice and direction. With this added feature, it feels as if my piano teacher is sitting next to me. I feel the purchaser of this book will find the same enjoyment for piano as I did, as they embark on a fine journey into the world of music.

Very happy with Ferrante's method of teaching! If you're just getting into piano, this book is a great step towards true proficiency. Ferrante begins with proper technique and music theory (note names, time signatures, and reading sheet music), essential to one's progress in music, and by the end has students confidently reading and playing some of the best known classics. While it is not an end-all method to learning piano (as implied by the title) it will smoothly transition you from beginner into intermediate piano studies. Just be sure to practice!

With the exception of Plato and Aristotle, who found teaching jobs and started Academies that lasted centuries, most of the early philosophers come across as cantankerous elderly vagrants of an argumentative disposition who congregated in public places. Almost all we know of Socratesâ€™ thought is what Plato has him say in various dialoguesâ€”he apparently was a master at leading his opponents into contradicting themselves. Plato and Aristotle, on the other hand, were prolific writers and doers who wrote widely on everything (Logic, Ethics, etc. and Science in the case of Aristotle), started the academies that made Athens famous and dominated philosophy until Galileo, Newton and the enlightenment 2000 years later. The importance of these early thinkers was not so much their systems of thought as their struggle to understand their world by reasoning. According to Aristotle the aim of human life is Eudaimonia, which translates as successful, admirable living and all round good fortune leading to a contented state of mind. The age of Aristotle, Plato and Socrates was followed by various competing sectsâ€”Epicureans, Stoics and Sceptics being the better known, and finally by the stifling rise of the Christian Church.There was a two-way exchange between philosophy, on the one hand, and the development of science, economics, psychology, mathematics, sociology, etc., on the other hand, over the 2000 years following the Age of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle; an age which saw the collapse of the Roman Empire, the rise of the Christian church and the general collapse of thought as the dark ages swept over Europe. Fortunately, the learning of ancient Europe was preserved and extended in the Arab world until it was rediscovered during the Renaissance in the 14th and 15th centuriesIn 1543 Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) published his account of the earth rotating about the sun, refuting both Aristotle and the doctrine of the Catholic Church. Shortly afterwards, Giordano Bruno, a Catholic friar, was burned at the stake for holding this view. Galileo (1564-1642) agreed with Copernicus about the earth rotating about the sun, disagreed with Aristotle and the Church about heavenly and earthly bodies being subject to different forces and built telescopes to view the heavenly bodies and confirm his theories. Galileo also agreed with Democritus and the Epicureans about the atomistic theory of matter, which was recognized to be in conflict with the Church doctrine which held that when bread and wine were consecrated by a priest that they became transubstantiated into the body and blood of Christ, for which beliefs he was condemned by the Church. God was brought into the atomic theory to placate the Church and allow the development of a mechanical science of nature by Gallileo, Kepler, Descartes and Hobbes to go forward. The best thinkers of the 17th century were struggling with questions of how is mental activity to be described in terms of Democritusâ€™ particles of matter, what is the place of man in a mechanistic universe and what is the place of God, laying the groundwork for Newton.

This is a delightful book. Gottlieb tells the story of western philosophy from the Pre-Socratics to the Renaissance. If this sounds a bit dry, trust me, it's not. Gottlieb writes with a lively style and with a good deal of wit and humor. And, he has a gift for making complex ideas comprehensible to non-specialists. I think one of the book's many strengths is the extensive discussion of philosophy prior to Socrates, a topic that most history of philosophy books summarize in a few pages. Understanding the Pre-Socratics is essential to understanding Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, so the extensive treatment of these thinkers from long, long ago is most welcome. As for Plato and Aristotle, thanks to Gottlieb, I unlearned a number of things I thought I knew. His reading of these two men is fresh and illuminating. The book gets a little lost, I believe, when Gottlieb discusses Medieval philosophy, but I think that's more the fault of Medieval philosophy than it is Gottlieb's. I look forward to reading the sequel. In summary, Gottlieb makes philosophy fun, which it ought to be. Reading about great minds trying to solve humanity's deepest questions is an intellectual adventure. The Dream of Reason is indeed an intellectual adventure, and when I read the last page I felt as if I had taken a most enjoyable trip through time.

Interesting thesis that the development of western civilization had two bursts: One around 400 BC and another around 1700-1800 AD. This book is about the first burst, and his other book on Dream of Enlightenment is about the second. The presentation is a balance between detail and generalization that I really like. I found it interesting that the Greeks posed 5 methods to govern a state and democracy was next to last in desirability. Most of the predicted problems with democracy are exactly what we see unfolding now.

Exceptional. I read Bertrand Russell's A History of Western Philosophy, and while I found it intriguing was a little disappointed that it was less a history, and more of Russell's opinions on philosophies in history (although it was still enjoyable to read, as Russell is a good writer, and has interesting opinions). Gottlieb may have been influenced to write this because of this, as he even mentions Russell's book sometimes within the book.Having said that, I think Gottlieb's book is far superior as a history of philosophy.Now, I know the book to give to people wanting to know more about the History of Western Philosophy: this book. Gottlieb's writing is superb, and the narrative flow works excellently. It is extremely throughly researched and sourced, so that if you want to learn more, you can look at his sources easily. More than that, the tone is respectful and objective, and Gottlieb explains the context as well as the arguments of the ancients. Some ideas are very confusing from a modern persepective, but Gottlieb always does a good job of explaining how the idea came about, what environment the idea lived in, and he tries to give the best gloss to it. This is what we need to do if we are to actually engage in new ideas, or consider new ones.I really, really recommend this book, as it is just full of interesting stories about philosophy, and the interesting people of philosophy. I can't wait to read Gottlieb's next book The Dream of Enlightenment.
