I read the book as good source to review and update my knowledge in Linux, since I have been working in Cisco gear only for quite time, and I've found a very good guide mix between exam material and what you need to learn and should practice. I believe the contents are updated as relevant learning Linux in 2018 even if the changes happen every time on its components until kernel 5 is released.About the exam, I have done the first of two and found it more difficult than the mock exam with relative new questions and subjects not covered in the book. I know this is mostly true of any certification guide, but I wanted to make clear that getting to know other resources is very important to the exam. As usual, the exam guide/blueprint contains the relevant updates.I do intend to read it a 3rd time next year to refresh knowledge before jumping into learning level 2, authors made a concise reading and technical quality material. If you are going read with a computer to practice, perhaps ebook versions will be easier than the big paper book, as it more than 600 pages and won't stay open itself with some support. Even so, printed book is good quality for a medium desktop. As for the ebook, Kindle version works great in an iPad and should on any Kindle device or Android ones.Last, you get access to online testing resources for a year on Wiley's portal. Having 80% or acing the mock exam won't guarantee passing on it but it is helpful reviewing the knowledge. Please, mind that questions covered some quite more material than the book and mock exam at time I took it in April/2018. Good luck.

I just took and passed the LPIC-1 tests with this as my study guide, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to someone else doing the same. I found the material dated in some places, poorly presented in others, and a bit softball in general compared to the test. I had to fall back on my experience a lot. It's not a bad guide, but I wouldn't use it alone, and I would do enough exploring and reading of similar topics to know the stuff in the book cold.

I'm a long-time Ubuntu user who, with help from my good friend Google, has managed to do lots of under-the-covers geeky things and written plenty of scripts for laptops and servers. But a professional admin, I am not.This book served as both a well-organized test-prep vehicle, it was also an excellent text book.Also: get yourself a printed and bound copy of the GNU coreutils documentation. The Urban Penguin website is also very helpful

Good as a teaching tool. Not really a reference book. The questions in the back have full explanation answers in the back. Also, the books skims over the "politics" of Linux since it addresses the LPIC exam You may have a favorite command or shell, but this book doesn't care.

This book didn't meet my expectations.The book is not bad, but it resembles more a reference guide instead of a teaching book to learn Linux.If you aren't experienced with Linux, you certainly need a second book in order to better understand the details of the different topics.

I have both the Kindle and hard copy of this book. The book is easy to read and directed toward passing the LPIC-1 exam. It’s not a manual in the traditional sense.I plan on buying for future exam levels.

This book covers everything I needed it to.

There is a LOT of material to cover for the LPIC-1, and this book manages to organize it in a clear, coherent, informative fashion. I can't say the same for other study guides. You will do well with either the physical version or the Kindle version of this book, as long as you take notes while reading, take the practice tests, keep using the flash cards, and review material once in a while. Each chapter should take a week or two to cover, each section a few hours.

I remember the news stories about the RJR Nabisco LBO back when it was happening but didn't give them much notice at the time. After reading a few Michael Lewis books and becoming interested in all things Wall Street, I decided to read this to finally discover what all those news stories had been about. I wasn't disappointed!This is a really good book. My only issue with it (and it's really my own mental limitations as opposed to any flaw in the book) is that the cast of characters and companies is so large that I had to re-read sections and take time to digest it all. I got overwhelmed at times and wanted to break out a white board to sketch out an overview. It's a great read though and really hard to put down.

This should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in understanding the current financial world. The authors write a gripping account of the outsized personalities and egos of the 1980s LBO boom using their exhaustive list of contacts. The book reads like a movie as the personalities leap out of the page. A lot of today's issues are explored: real business vs the financial world, the possibilities and risks of leverage, captured boards and profligate executives vs activist investors.The authors pass along such perfect lines like, when speaking about RJR's expense account manager, "the only man who can take an unlimited budget and exceed it." I also liked Ross Johnson's summary of Wall Street: "Never play by the rules. Never pay in cash. And never tell the truth."

While not the same story as Enron, the corporate games and minimal concern for employees at RJR Nabisco was equally appalling. If you read about the Savings and Loan crisis you will also see much in common. I was only vaguely aware of this story and was riveted by it. I had trouble putting this book down. It's thorough while still an easy read and you don't need to be a student of economics to understand it). It's also scary because this is but one of very many examples of corporate, institutional, and wall street greed and self involvement that, unfortunately, is way too prevalent.

Like this passage:"Around eleven o'clock they were joined by Matthew Rosen, the team's thirty-six-year-old tax counsel. Rosen was a lawyer from the 'Thirtysome-thing' crowd: Italian suits, tassled loafers, an office crammed with modern-art [Kandisky likenesses I hear my mind wondering as a reader?], the kind of early 1970s rabble-rouser embarrassed to tell his Swarthmore class reunion he now made millions sniffing out tax loopholes for corporate takeovers".Some educational takeaways include the role of junk bonds, the intricacies as well as benefits/costs of LBOs with the help of management (i.e. friendly) vs. hostile takeovers, moral hazard/conflicts of interest issues involving banks and financial advisors, the crucial role of good valuation work and thorough due diligence, managing public relations, deal confidentiality, managing Board of Directors relations, information security and bid strategy. Will one be ready to enact one's first billion dollar LBO after completing this book? Not yet. I would Rick Rikerten's Book "Buyout: The Insider's Guide to Buying Your Own Company" if you are looking to gain practical insight on more compact deals for that.A book I came across entitled, "The New Financial Capitalists: Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and the Creation of Corporate Value" by George Baker and George Davis Smith would also complement the reading of Burrough's and Helyar's book quite well. The latter is a bit more academic than Barbarians At The Gate but it's often both fun and educational to look at some of the same topic matter from different angles.As far as the history making story emboldened on every page of this book, as the authors say "You couldn't make this stuff up."---Vel primus vel cum primis---
