About the Author

Carolyn Elizabeth is a long time reader of all genres of lesbian fiction and has, for years, imagined counting herself among the writers whose books have been entertaining and inspiring her for nearly two decades. The writing of her own stories has proven to be a thrilling, unpredictable and, at times, poorly thought out personal journey―much like her twenties―and one she wouldn’t change for the world. Carolyn Elizabeth lives and works in London, Ontario with her amazing wife, their two sweet sons and two ridiculous dogs.

As soon as I read Carolyn Elizabeth's very creative limerick as her debut book promo plug, I knew I simply had to find out more about "Gallows Humor." And after reading an excerpt on Bella Books, my assumption was correct about Elizabeth's skill as a writer and a storyteller. What caught my attention as I breezed through the excerpt was the fact that the main protagonist, Corey, was a medical examiner - a profession that I've always been fascinated with, particularly all the medical and technical methodology involved in dissecting and examining the human anatomy, post-mortem, in order to determine cause of death. I must say, I thought of Rad's "Heart Stop," the only other lesfic book I'd read that featured an ME. But the similarity ended there. And then, there was the other main protagonist, Thayer, an ER fellow. What made her a bit different than the other romantic interests in medical romance, at least with the impression I had just by reading the excerpt, which also made me exceedingly curious about her, was how Elizabeth was alluding to the way the romance was gonna be told. So, obviously, I had to read the book! So glad I did!!What I utterly enjoyed most about Corey's job was that it was described and depicted with scrupulous attention to detail. Elizabeth's vivid description of every technical step taken of the post-mortem, e.g. her on-site examination and in the presence of homicide detectives/coppers needing a PM done as part of the police investigation or simply to close the case, was brilliantly presented. I felt like I was watching it unfold IRL right before my eyes! It immediately reminded me of "Silent Witness"! Oh, how I love detailed methodological approaches splashed across the pages for my reading pleasure - provided that the writing style used to express them isn't dull and monotonic, obvs! It IS fiction, not academia. In essence, Elizabeth pulled it off quite effectively, I must say. I was thrilled! Morgue action! Who doesn't love it, eh? Well, I do! ;)But I loved Thayer, ER fellow, the other main protagonist. She stumbled upon Corey when she wandered her way into the morgue just as Corey was having a "show and tell" with her students and residents. Instant attraction, yes, but I loved how Elizabeth crafted the attraction and how both Thayer and Corey went about it. It was refreshing to read how forward Thayer was in expressing her attraction toward Corey from the start, who, despite being the "player" with abs of steel and all that, would descend into a bumbling idiot whenever she was in Thayer's orbit! Thayer's actions and her POV in regard to her feelings (physical and/or emotional) for Corey were depicted with such unconventionally uninhibited honesty and openness, which isn't very common in lesfic's MCs, that I was captivated by what Thayer would say or do next!In other words, Elizabeth managed to make Thayer's "chase" thrilling to read, especially with Corey's constant "deer-caught-in-the-headlights" kind of reaction because...well, Thayer's irresistibly gorgeous (so much so that she was regularly gawked at by both genders, mind you!) so she obviously couldn't believe how Thayer could take an interest in her (forgetting that she herself was a looker, albeit the buffed, athletic kind, if you catch my drift!). Anyway, the whole setup was amusingly fun for me to read and explore! I loved the back-and-forth between these two - I mean, Elizabeth's rich descriptions of their appearances made their encounters even more acutely seductive and appealing to read, including the humour which was a mixture of playfulness, flirtatious and downright provocative at times! Such fun and Elizabeth nailed the language flow with aplomb! There was a questionable death that Corey was not letting go ever since she found something not quite right when she was performing a PM on the vic's body. Although, this was where I felt the situation with Corey and her obsession to investigate the real C.O.D. to be a little too unrealistic, not just because it wasn't within the scope of her job, but rather, how she went about it. Unlike Radclyffe's Oliva Price, chief ME in "Heart Stop," whose job description included crime scene visits and on-site examination, forensic pathological investigations, I don't think Corey's scope as an ME included field work, at least Elizabeth didn't elaborate on that. So I just chalked it up to Corey just being naive and a little too reckless in going about her actions, totally unaware of all the inevitable consequences which might come back to haunt her.Perhaps that's why Elizabeth gave her an aftermath she'd never likely to forget for the rest of her life, eh? You simply must read to find out just what Elizabeth put Corey through....and Thayer, for that matter because....can you say, "collateral damage?" The entire construction of that part of the story from the second act of the book onward, which, imo, was essentially the crux of the entire love story and journey between Corey and Thayer, was quite original because of how Elizabeth weaved and depicted the physical and emotional ramifications of the life-threatening event that befell them. The journey back to normalcy after such a harrowing experience, for both Corey and Thayer, respectively, was written with enough angst to create a dramatic effect that worked well in the relationship story but it did drive me a little mad at one point, though, especially when it came to Corey and her obstinate selfishness and insecurities. Poor Thayer! But it was a journey that Corey had to suffer through in order to come out of it with a better understanding of herself, the lesson that she had to learn about falling in love with Thayer, trusting her own emotional entanglement and allowing herself to be vulnerable with Thayer, ultimately letting go of her insecurities and openly experience the physical and emotional intimacy of her relationship with her "person" - Thayer. And for Thayer, I was delighted to see her own growth as well, when it came to dealing with her emotional connection with, and her desire and love for Corey, which needed some drastic shift from both her and Corey, in order to move forward in their relationship. I was afraid that Elizabeth would portray her to be this person who was so in love with Corey that she'd lose herself. Thank goodness, all the angst and hair pulling were worth it in the end! Phew! All in all, I thought Elizabeth crafted a compelling love story between someone who was oblivious to the inner workings of falling in love and feeling emotionally connected with another person, and someone who was the polar opposite, completely open and free in expressing her desire, passion, love and intimacy for someone she'd strong and deep feelings for. This dichotomy between the two MCs' characters, along with their own POVs described by Elizabeth, as their relationship grew, were interesting to explore and discover. I enjoyed Elizabeth's writing style and for a debut effort, she sure has shown a lot of potential. I, for one, will be keeping a look out for her next book!If you're a fan of medical romance, I reckon you will enjoy this novel. The mystery part of the story wasn't the focus. It was utilised more like a conduit to Corey and Thayer's journey of romance, falling in love and acceptance. The medical part, especially Corey's job as an ME, whilst I wish Elizabeth would expand and elaborate more as the story proceeded (well, because I'm a science nerd, that's why!), I thought it worked out well because the focus was primarily about the romance between the two gorgeous ladies, really, and the complexities that came with it especially when trauma and certain complications, mental and emotional, were thrown into the mix, giving the story and its characters it’s dramatic depth. So, give "Gallows Humor" a read because it's bloody worth it, you'll see! Well done, Ms. Elizabeth!

Debut novels are always a gamble, but there is nothing like discovering a talented new writer. This book almost reads like a fairy tale, albeit one where much of the action takes place in a morgue. The two leads have great chemistry, and the word that kept coming to mind as I read this was *fun*.I certainly hope the author revisits these characters. I look forward to more!

Oh yes, this was right up my alley! Corey Curtis is a forensic anthropologist working at Jackson City Memorial Hospital’s morgue. She performs autopsies and helps train residents which is when she first lays eyes on Dr. Thayer Reynolds. Thayer is starting her Emergency Department fellowship when she wonders to the morgue to check out the mysterious Curtis. The attraction is immediate, but before they can act on it, Corey finds herself in the midst of investigating the cause of death of one of her autopsies as there is not enough evidence for the police to take the case on as a homicide. Her investigation makes her and Thayer face dire events and consequences that put their lives and budding romance at risk. The initial interactions between the main characters were funny and well written. One could feel the spark right away. Both main characters are strong women with no horrible past to keep them from acknowledging their feelings, thank you! Sometimes it seems all characters in lesfic have something to overcome or keep them from acting in a rational manner towards a new, fantastic experience. I found it refreshing, although wondered where the story would go then. However, have no fear, the author manages conflict in other wonderful ways! This book has so many great elements. There is a first-responder feel to the story even though Corey is a morgue employee. There are definitely medical themes throughout the book, and I’ll be honest, I absolutely loved them. The author gets a chance to shine through her expertise in forensic anthropology, which is terrific as it gives instant credibility to her work. There is also some action, a gym, and let’s not forget that the characters’ connection is great too! The secondary characters are well done and in particular, I enjoyed the police officer, Collier. His banter with Corey was very entertaining and no doubt added depth to the story. On the downside, the mystery is straightforward and not meant to be the main focus of the book. This may disappoint some avid mystery readers. This is Ms Elizabeth’s debut novel. I can’t help but be excited for her future work and hope she turns this story into a series. 4.5
