This is a bitter book from a passionate man who has very little good to say about the world he lives in.

Controversial former federal court judge Bork (The Tempting of America) has produced a wide-ranging but turgid jeremiad, citing mostly familiar, conservative explanations for American decline. Thus he attacks multiculturalism, racial and sexual politics, the Supreme Court and the criminal justice and welfare systems, among others, often relying on the work of critics such as Charles Murray, Thomas Sowell, Richard Bernstein and Christopher Lasch. Bork's tone can be overwrought: "[M]odern liberalism... is what fascism looks like when it has captured significant institutions, most notably the universities." He also offers a knee-jerk condemnation of rock and rap. Despite such verbiage, Bork does strike a chord with his criticisms that individualism and egalitarianism have loosened social ties and weakened America, and with his warnings that recent decisions on assisted suicide may have broad, Roe v. Wade-like implications. Several arguments should spur debate. Bork disagrees with those who call for greater economic equality?"it is not that America is odd compared to Sweden, but that Sweden is odd compared to us." He believes that constitutional legitimacy can only be reclaimed if we pass a constitutional amendment allowing Congress to override federal and state court decisions. He also supports censorship of "the most violent and sexually explicit material," though he doesn't suggest how it might be implemented. Amazing how Judge Bork was able to predict the decline and fall of American values, that resulted from LIBERALISM and the idiocy of its followers.
Although this was written almost 20 years ago, Robert Bork's analysis of the cultural and moral decay in our country is still timely and spot on. A must read for anyone concerned about the direction in which our nation is going.
Excellent book. If you want understand how modern Liberalism moved so far Left and its impact on our culture, this is a "must read."
Deep and on the mark.
I loved the book because I considered Robert Bork one of the great unsung heroes of the past thirty years and as a tribute to his recent passing, I decided to read this, the best known of his books.. This book is evidence of the clarity of his thought and in many ways, explains why he was considered too dangerous to confirmed for the U.S. Supreme Court.
You can see why he was opposed by the left when he was nominated by President Reagan for the Supreme Court. His analysis of the disintegration of our culture by radical egalitarianism and radical individualism is well expressed and has come to fruition as he foresaw the future. A must read to understand why our government is turning its back on the Constitution!
This is one of the BEST books I have read in quite some time! I highly recommend it!
Wow - powerful secular explanation of the development of 20th century Liberalism from a scholarly, intelligent, conservative viewpoint. I read this after Mark Lavine's books and Francis Shaffer's "The Great Evangelical Disaster".
