Continuing with my addiction to Sandra Brown's writing, I had to pick up this book after finishing reading Friction. Mean Streak has a great plot with plenty of twists to make a suspense lover giddy with happiness.Dr. Emory Charbonneau is training on a mountain trail for her upcoming marathon run. She's well-known in the area. Her partners at her office respect her and her patients love her. On the other hand, her home life is not so great. She's having marital problems just before she goes missing. Detectives Grange and Knight are suspicious of her husband Jeff and they are set on trying to prove it.In the meantime, Emory wakes up in a cabin with a concussion in the presence of a stranger. At first, she's terrified of him but when he doesn't attack her or do anything worse, she starts relaxing in his presence. He's a man of a few words. He makes her reveal parts of herself while he hides everything from her, including his name. She can't avoid noticing how handsome he is and to her dismay, she's attracted to him. The more time she's forced to spend with him, the more she wants to get to know him. It doesn't help that she's unable to leave due to heavy fog and snow. From here on, the narrative only gets better. This reader was entertained and engrossed in the story. I won't say more to avoid spoiling it for you.As with other books by Sandra Brown, I had fun reading Mean Streak. The main characters, as well as the side characters, were all well- developed. It was easy to like some of them and easy to hate a few. The twists and the side plotlines were the icing on the cake.Next for me is Envy.Cliffhanger: No4.5/5 Fangs

Dr. Emory Charbonneau loves long distance running – in fact, she’s rather obsessed with it. It, among other things, has set off a series of arguments between her and her husband, Jeff Surrey. One thing that hasn’t been argued, but is the elephant in the room, is that Emory begins to sense that Jeff is having an affair. She goes from her home in Atlanta to the mountains of North Carolina for a weekend of training for an upcoming marathon that she has organized. She’s selected a rather rough terrain and begins training. She’s been running for some time, pushing herself, when she hears rustling behind her. Before she can react, she’s struck on the head. Lights out! When she awakens, she assumes the man in the room is her abductor. He’s been taking care of her and assures her that he won’t harm her. But, he won’t even tell her his name. Severe fog had moved in overnight preventing her from leaving the cabin. So, she continues to heal from what she suspects is a concussion while the weather gets increasingly worse. She can’t even let Jeff know she’s alright. No phone; no cell phone service; no way to travel in this mess. But they soon have even more problems in the form of Mr. NoName’s neighbors.Back to Jeff – yes, he is having an affair. In fact, he took full advantage while Emory was away for her weekend. However, Sunday came and went and she still wasn’t home. He hesitated to report it; he just thought she was punishing him after their argument. Once he does report it, the officials begin to suspect him. He’s got what they consider motivation. This is Sandra Brown’s newest novel. I can’t lie; I loved it – all of it! All of the characters, like them or hate them, were fleshed out very well. Each new chapter was a new adventure. There was not one moment that I didn’t look forward to what was going to happen next. The twists, and there were a few of them, were delightfully played. There was one scene toward the end in which the logistics didn’t seem to fit. To explain it further would be to give away a spoiler. As a side note, there are a lot of bad Amazon reviews. Not all, but many of them stem from the preview that was being offered as a free kindle download. There are also reviews for sale on Amazon that cause even more confusion for buyers. Many people thought they were getting the book. So if you download Mean Streak, please be careful what you’re getting. I rated Mean Streak at 4.5 out of 5.

I loved this book - I'm a fan of Nora Roberts, but needed a change. This book kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Who's the bad guy - because there has to be a bad guy. Just when I thought I'd figured it out, it zigged, it zagged. It was a great read and I never saw the ending coming - which is unusual, usually you know who the bad guy is and only thing left is how they catch him. I am looking forward to reading my next Sandra Brown book.

My first Sandra Brown book and I was not disappointed. I alway read the one star reviews and usually let them affect my purchase. However, this author was recommended by a friend, avid reader of all types of stories. Therefore I took a chance and glad I did. There was enough suspence that I did not want to put the book down and the romance appealing. I liked the main characters, think the author does a good job of letting the reader visualize and understand their emotional makeup. I understood Hayes complex makeup and motivation. For this genre, the author provides good reading. To expect the great novel is unrealistic.

Emory didn't know how to give up, it was one of her enduring qualities and what made her such an excellent doctor and marathon runner. Loved by her patients and colleagues, admired by all...or was she? Jeff, her husband of three years paled by comparison. The author does a good job of relaying the mixed emotions of the Heroine under very taxing conditions. Emory's made to step way out of her comfort zone while her natural ability which makes her a good physician comes through. At times, you're not sure about the mystery man who is very patient with her, but manages to not answer any personal questions. Ms Brown takes time to develop and flesh out her characters and some are truly despicable. My main issue is that the reasons for the crime at the end were kind of "pat" and didn't justify the magnitude of the offense. I guess when you're dealing with unhinged individuals, good reasons might be asking for a bit too much. Also, not sure I would have continued the search for as long as Jack did especially under those circumstances, but then it was all part of the development. I enjoyed this book, I haven't read all of the author's writings, but a fair amount and this is one of my favorites. I would definitely recommend.

The Lotus Sutra: A Contemporary Translation of a Buddhist Classic, by Gene Reeves

Review

"Difficult as it may be to interpret ancient Tibetan Buddhist imagery for contemporary meditators, it is perhaps even more challenging to make historical Buddhist texts accessible. In a new translation of The Lotus Sutra, Gene Reeves aims to do just this. Reeves uses everyday language wherever possible, translating into English many words that previous works have left in Sanskrit. This approach is particularly appropriate for the Lotus Sutra, which emphasizes that enlightenment is attainable for everyone." (Tricycle)"This translation is immediately the new standard, expressing the Lotus Sutra with accuracy, clarity, and fresh readability. The text's genius and subtle spiritual teachings are skillfully captured for a wide audience." (Taigen Dan Leighton, Loyola University, author of Visions of Awakening Space and Time: Dogen and the Lotus Sutra)"A highly readable new translation of the great Lotus Sutra, Gene Reeves skillfully renders the complexity of the text from a scholarly standpoint while delivering its flavor for practitioners. An invaluable resource for students in the classroom as well as in the meditation hall." (Mark Unno, University of Oregon, author of Shingon Refractions)"For readers who are not familiar with the Lotus Sutra, this is an excellent opportunity to acquaint oneself with a bedrock Mahayana text. Dr. Reeves brings a welcome perspective of both scholarship and sympathy to the text, which is extremely multifaceted and requires flexibility to fully represent its fascinating-and at times somewhat frustrating-elements. This new version is also particularly important because it includes the rarely translated Sutra of Innumerable Meanings and the Sutra of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, which are traditionally considered to be the preface and appendix of the main text and hold an important place in the liturgy and study of the Lotus Sutra. And Dr. Reeves has made a strong effort to make the text truly accessible to anyone, including non-Buddhists and non-specialists." (Tricycle Editors' Blog)

This is a fine translation. Readable, clear, poetic. So why two stars? It's something that's mentioned in almost every review - but I think the problem is more serious than has often been discussed. That's the translator's need to change the names of non-human beings in the text to figures from Greek mythology.Yes. As many others have noticed, it's jarring. But it's more than that. One of the realities of the Buddhist worldview is that there are innumerable other types of intelligent beings, some beneficent, and some maleficent. These beings - the rakshas, yakshasas, kimnanras, and many others are, to a Buddhist, absolutely real. They are as real as humans or animals. But Mr. Reeves "translation" of these creatures into satyrs, nymphs, centaurs does far more harm than simply sounding infelicitous. His approach makes these creatures - and by extension, the vast cosmos of the Lotus - seem mythological. Not real. A fantasy. And that, I think, does a major injustice to the world view of the sutra.Without that? I'd give the translation 5 stars. But I think this choice on his part is sufficiently serious that it needs to be pointed out as more than just a rather bizarre translation choice.

Reviewing the Lotus Sutra is like reviewing Homer's Iliad or the Book of Jonah. It is one of the world's great wisdom texts but that doesn't mean it is an easy read. It was originally written more or less to be performed, to be chanted and brought to life by human voices, not perused from the luxury of our armchair. Reeves does an admirable attempt at translating but the use of the terms from Greek mythology still remains a problematic and unnecessary choice and in hind sight I would have probably went with another translator.

It is so delightful to have a very readable and lively translation of a scripture beloved to so many. Every time the opportunity comes I enjoy reading and reflecting on these words. Reeves companion book, "Stories from the Lotus Sutra," is also very good. This is a teaching from the heart of the mahayana, and I've always felt it's special gift was the joy of true entrustment. To experience the presence of a vast multitude of awakened and awakening beings, here for us, ever offering "skillful means" to nudge us toward discovery of the ultimate dimension, this is what turns our hearts and minds to that deep trust and confidence making the path joyous. Thanks to all the hard working and perceptive translator/ practitioners whose work of love is so fruitful.

Complete Lotus sutra - much more to it than you would think. Includes the famous 25th chapter on Guan Yin (Avalokiteshvara), Who hears all the cries of the world.

Easier to understand than the other version I have and the introduction is very good with respect to background information.

This is an easy to read translation. You don't have to be a scholar or a long time practicing Buddhist to understand this version. The Burton Watson translation is the only other one I have read. It was more difficult. Mr. Reeves' version is easier for a new Buddhist or someone who wants to read and learn about Buddhism to digest.

From Sanskrit to Chinese to English. Some areas seem to lack fluidity but that is common to any translation. This is my first reading of the Dharma of the Lotus Sutra but I am pleased with the experience.

Good quality book, easy to understand.

I bought this for my eleven-year-old daughter, even though it says for 5 to 10 year olds. She wanted to do a Marian consecration but I think Father Gaitley's book was a little beyond her (not that she couldn't read and comprehend it, but it was more than she could handle). She likes it; though there is some subject matter that is explained as if for the first time with which she is already familiar, she says she does not feel as though it is talking down to her. It's easy enough that she has stayed on track thus far on her own without any prompting from me. We are doing our consecration together this year (me renewing and she for the first time) so when it comes time we will do the final steps together and then maybe as I am going on pilgrimage to Fatima and Lourdes I will get her something to wear as a reminder!

A stunningly beautiful book and formula for children and their entire family to learn about, develop a deeper appreciation for, and make a commitment to our Blessed Mother. The book is practical, engaging, and meaningful for the whole family to read together or for an older child to pray through on his or her own. The cover is gorgeous and the short sections are accompanied inside by lovely line drawings which complement but don't distract from the purpose of the book.Dr. Gress has done her Mariology research and presents it in an accessible way for children. While our family is still working through the book, it's important to note that the book gives children the responsibility to DO something through reading the book, to consecrate themselves to Mary. It's not just a storybook but an activity and dedication, more than only spiritual reading. Each section comes with discussion questions, interesting facts, and prayers. Familiar children's stories like Anne of Green Gables, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Chronicles of Narnia are used to impart lessons and stories of saints are also included. We received the book as a gift and I've already ordered three more for First Communion gifts. I absolutely love introducing others, especially children, to the idea of Marian consecration and there is no better way than through this book! As the cover says, the book should be "bringing Mary to life in young hearts and minds."

Remarkably well written! It personalizes the approach of bringing children to Jesus through His Immaculate Mother. Marvelous stories to inspire the children to a deeper level of devotion to Jesus, through Mary.

Giving it to my grandchildren to encourage devotion to the Mother of God, Mary.

I bought this book to read to my children during the month of May, to help prepare them for consecrating themselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It's divided into 33 short "conferences", one to be read each day of the month, ending with the Consecration on Day 34. While some of the conferences are probably very beautiful and inspiring, my kids will never know -- unless they first chug through 18 children's classics as a prerequisite to consecrating themselves to Our Blessed Mother! Sound weird? Yeah, to me too. When I purchased this book, I'd read in the blurb that the author uses a few children's stories to make some of her points. But I was totally unprepared for and very dismayed by the many, many references to fiction books sprinkled throughout. When I picked it up and started reading aloud Day One to my sons, I stopped short at the second paragraph. The entire rest of the conference talked about nothing but the lion character, Aslan, in the Chronicles of Narnia, comparing him to Christ. My boys aren't into fantasy and have never read the Chronicles of Narnia. A little upset, I flipped to Day Two. The story of Aslan continued. Okay, so jump to Day Three. By this time, I was really hoping the author would start talking about Our Lord or Our Lady. Nope. All of a sudden we have a new character, Digory, from the book "The Magician's Nephew." To say I was getting frustrated is an understatement. The spell of reading to my sons had been broken, and I was starting to wonder what kind of book I'd spent my money on. I sent them off to play while I rifled through the next few conferences. FINALLY one was about Our Lady and the Annunciation, which came at Day Four. Immediately following, on Day Five, was a long reference to the characters in the novel, Little Lord Fauntleroy, comparing Cedric's love of his mom to Christ's love for His Mother. My sons had not read that book either. Great.By this time I was pretty dismayed. I looked in the index and discovered that the author compares Our Lady's life and devotion to Her to no less than EIGHTEEN children's books, everything from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (I jest not) to Green Eggs and Ham and Winnie-the-Pooh. Out of the eighteen books referenced, my sons were only familiar with four of them. Even of those four, I couldn't figure out what on earth they had to do with loving the Blessed Virgin at all. My heart sank as I realized I would be skipping many of the conferences in this book, unless I waited a year and read all those novels to my children first.I put the book on the shelf and haven't picked it up since. I somehow doubt I ever will. It could have been such a beautiful treasure, but instead it was extremely disappointing.

Beautiful book for children to introduce them to Marian Consecration. We have 5 boys ages 10 - 6 months so we read it aloud together as a family. We all enjoyed the presentation, beautiful artwork, discussion questions and prayers.

This book is incredibly beautiful. We bought it for our kids but they’re a little young for the intended age so we’ll be waiting a while to use it with them. My husband and I enjoyed the reflections though!

This book is great. It’s approachable with kids, as it contains references to other children’s stories like the Lord of the Rings. My 8 and 10 year old girls loved this.

As a former resident of Juneau, it was nice to find a book on the glacier and to see how far it has gone back over the years. Mark Kelley is a wonderful photographer, he finds places that most of us would never see.
