I bought this book for research purposes - my thesis is on animation censorship and Cohen's book has proven to be a valuable source of information. It's too bad it came out not too long before South Park first aired - I bet he could have had a field day with that show. Cohen obviously did lots and lots of research, not only from written sources, but going so far as to conduct interviews with various people in the industry so that his book has totally exclusive content. It also isn't just about Western-made cartoons either - there's information on imported animation as well as independent films and even strikes at all the big animation studios. And Cohen really covers all bases too. I think he goes on about Song of the South for about 20 pages alone.My only complaint is that there isn't more artwork. Don't get me wrong, there are some images, but it's a book about animation! There were only a few pieces of artwork throughout the whole book. I kind of wish Cohen would have at least done that thing where authors will put a few pages of color images right in the middle of the book.Don't let my one complaint sway you from a purchase, though. This book is very much worth it and is a great source of information right up to the 1990s. I almost wish he'd release an updated version covering things from the 1990s to the present - with the current airing of many more mature cartoons like South Park, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken, Metalocalypse, The Boondocks and many other titles, the author would have plenty of new material to cover.

Animation has always been a reflection of popular culture, sometimes on the cutting edge, sometimes just a mainstream reaction. Yet because of the popular idea that animation is "kids stuff," it is sometimes not taken seriously. Cohen tries to shine a light on how animation goes way beyond "kids stuff" and reflects on the social forces that went into the creation of animated shorts and features. Despite being seen as a niche, animation has been subjected to a lot of self imposed rules of what can and cannot be shown, and to a lot of outside forces by both organized efforts such as the Hayes Office and less organized efforts such as popular protests against films like Coonskin or Fritz the Cat.You do not have to know a lot about animation to enjoy this book. It helps, but most of us have been exposed to a number of the examples cited over the course of growing up. And what is politically incorrect is a moving target, so what was acceptable in one era is wholly out now. We see it even today with the television censorship of violence in classic cartoons.It's also important to note that despite being seen as a less serious medium that could often get away with more than film, animators were still subject to the same winds of politics as illustrated by the final chapter on blacklisting. Animators were asked to name names to the HUAC, and many did not work in Hollywood again for defying the committee. Until I read this book I had no idea of the breadth of this blacklisting upon animators and it reinforces the shame of this era of our history.Rather than passing judgment, Cohen uses mostly illustrations to show his point, letting the reader decide how much was/is too much. And he brings this battle of content into the late 20th century with examples of battles over The Simpsons, and Ren and Stimpy. Overall a very fascinating look into an area that is usually glossed over or ignored.

I can say Karl F. Cohen really made a lot of research to publish this book, time flies by when you read the great anecdotes about how animation is affected by censorship. It has a great material for the animation enthusiasts and researchers. Maybe a few more illustrations would make the book better, but the information is a true treasure,and you will learn curious facts and well documented situations on the animation industry. A most for anyone that loves animation and feel curiosity about how animated short films and features has been affected since the Hays Code until our PC times.

WAS LOOKING FOR A LIST OF ANIMATIONS THAT HAVE BEAN CENSORED. BECAUSE IM IN 2018 , IN A TIME OF IDIOTS TRYING TO CHANGE OR DELETE HISTORY. SO I WAS HOPING TO COLLECT AS MUCH OF THESE FILMS WHILE I STILL CAN SO THAT THE PEOPLE AROUND ME WILL KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT THE PAST.

Great book!

While the subject matter is fascinating, the book itself is in serious need of tighter editing. In fact, I got so frustrated with the author's disjointed writing style (it jumps all over the place) that I could only make it through half of the book. Every time I go back to the book to attempt to finish it, I'm quickly reminded why I couldn't finish it in the first place.I really want to like this book, but its lack of a coherent structure prevents me from recommending it. I have found that other books from this particular publisher (McFarland) would benefit from more aggressive editing.

[edited from the original for clarity] I would be careful using this book as a single source to read the documents.I suggest that it has a bias in that it mentions a “3rd Version of the Constitution” which is not a new document but the author’s statement about the current controversy concerning how the Constitution has been applied in certain decisions over the last 100 years and is therefore “not working”. It also adds a quiz to the 10th amendment asking the reader how they think the amendment should be applied. This appears to be the only amendment that has this type of opinion quiz.The reminder of the book treats the Bill of Rights and the Constitution in a relatively straightforward manner. I can only wonder why the author decided to include this particular controversial issue in a introductory book specifically designed for “new immigrants, students just learning and people who don’t have time to learn much beyond reading the documents”. An audience who, due to their recent introduction to the documents, is likely not yet prepared to deal with this controversy.If it was important to add this "advanced study" topic to a book designed to be an introduction to the documents then the best treatment of the controversy would be to at least introduce both sides of the issue. Since only one side of the issue was presented it does seem to show a specific bias in the controversy of how to read the Constitution in this specific situation. It does not even mention there is controversy concerning this issue.This book also does not provide any citations to guide the reader for further study which I think is a shortcoming.I suggest this book should be used as only one text on how to read [and understand] the US Constitution. It has some good, easy to read content for the intended audience. I think it shows a specific bias in the area mentioned above and may add a level of confusion to readers new to the Constitution. Which is why only 2 stars.

My League of Women Voters chapter is using this for a study on the Constitution. The author is coming from a definite conservative/right wing pov but the information is still valid and good to know, especially these days.

I really liked the clear and concise way that the book lays out the structure of the constitution, along with what it actually says and the reasons for the separation of powers. It is NOT a "living document" subject to the whims of current fashion and fancy. The Founders wrote it to be a clear limit to federal power and reach. It is clearly a constitution that aims to preserve the liberty of the people of the United States.

A very clean, easy, and effective way to get into the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. I wish I had this book years ago when studing these documents in school. It is set up like a tutorial. The structure of each document is discussed and the reader is told what to look for when reading the actual documents. Then a series of quizzes are provided to test your understanding and mastery. Very clean, logical, and well done. Only grief I have is that the author is a conservative. His conservative bias shows through. I am a fairly savvy reader and easily identified the conservative influences. Others just starting out may not be able to distinguish the actual material from the indoctrination. I am probably making more of this than is justified, but I feel that it needs to be mentioned. For this reason I deducted a star.

Simple, clear and an easy read for all Americans who want (and should understand) the importance of these two documents. No other country on the face of the planet have anything close to our inalienable rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution. Understand them and call your representatives regularly to keep them in check to ensure you are being represented according!y. Stay vigilant because once we lose these rights they are gone forever!

It touches on the view that the world is a unity. We all have everything to do with the cause and effect that brings our world to where it is today. We all have a purpose and duty to the place that we live. I have always been interested in Stoicism quotes in general and this book has a surplus of amazing faces in history contributing to that. I would recommend for any one looking to touch up on the topic or out of mere interest. George Tanner’s imagery is beyond explanation. Can’t wait to read what’s next!

The reason I did not give the book five stars is because after several chapters in which acceptance of the outcome and responsibility for personal choices is repeated, as well as the avoidance of the vagaries of politics, the virtues and justice of several leftist talking points are extolled. Excepting that closing inconsistency, the book is excellent overall and makes great strides towards increasing access for a larger number of people to a life philosophy which will benefit them and society.

This book is great for those studying for an exam on the respiratory system. It is very helpful and everything is explained in great detail. You can go ahead and buy books that cost $50+, but often times the author has problems explaining himself. This definitely wasn't the case in this book. I know much more about the respiratory system now. I will definitely read more from Eva Regan!

I was requested to give a review on this book for new nurses for their exams. A very detailed book about respiratory illness, symptoms and actions to take. It also clearly explain the medical jargon for easier understanding. Whats really good was the 100 questions mock test given at the back, not only the question very relevant, the answers to the questions are well explained. Would recommend this book to anyone taking the NCLEX exam who wants a compact quick reference book.

I know that Amish communities vary but many author's use this as a creative license to create their own fictitious Amish rules. One thing that did not ring true for me was the unforgiving nature of her Amish characters. Forgiveness is at the very core of their faith. The same day a crazed murderer opened fire on that Amish school, they went right to his widow 's house and offered her comfort. They did not blame her or shun her as her American neighbors did. Even the Amish children who were murdered forgave their attacker. So the petty and uncharitable Amish characters in this book just don't ring true. Also some typos and editing mistakes. Still... it was a very good story. I enjoyed it and may read one more by this author before I decide whether to add her to my list of must read or not.

This is the first in this thrilling series. I've read different types of Amish mysteries and I think they are all very good, but this particular series seems very deep and really describes the Amish way of life. Chloe touched my heart and her friendship with Becky really made the story real.Chloe begins her journey to Appleseed Creek by working for the college. Although she only plans to stay for a short time, you can tell she is excited to make the change. As she is driving, she meets up with Becky, a young Amish girl who is being taunted by a couple of hooligans. Chloe offers Becky assistance and their friendship begins despite their differences. Soon Becky explains to Chloe about her desire to be an artist and that she has left the Amish community to become English.With no place Togo, Chloe offers Becky a place to stay an offers her comfort during this emotional time. Timothy is Becky's brother and he has left the Amish community as well. He appreciates Chloe taking in Becky and does what he can to help.Becky tries to find a job, but no one in the community is willing to help her. On the day of a promising job interview, Becky takes Chloe's car and a horrible accident happens. Becky is in trouble now and this causes further separation from her family. When the accident takes the life of the Bishop, Becky is pushed away from everyone and feels that she may have been punished for leaving the Amish community.Once the investigation begins, certain things are discovered and maybe Becky wasn't responsible for the accident.Someone has deeper motives and Becky and Chloe fight to uncover the truth.This was such a heartwarming story, filled with mystery and intrigue. I am a definite fan and look forward to reading more in this 5 star series.

Chloe Humphrey has a new job at Harshberger College in Appleseed Creek as the Director of Computer Services. She is hoping to work there for two years to get the experience she needs for a job at a bigger college. On her way to her new home she encounters Becky Troyer. Becky is being hounded by new men and is desperate to escape them. Chloe rescues Becky and gains a new friend and roommate!Becky Troyer is nineteen and has decided to leave her Amish home. Becky wants to be an artists (portraying faces) and it is not allowed by her Bishop. Chloe agrees to let Becky temporarily stay with her. Timothy Troyer is ex-Amish and is now a carpenter in Appleseed Creek. Timothy is Becky’s brother. Timothy tries to convince Becky to go home, but he is unsuccessful. Becky wants to pursue her art and is not ready to settle down and get married.Chloe’s first week in Appleseed Creek is not what she expected. Her new rental home is very dilapidated. She meets her new employees and only two of them are welcoming. Then she gets a call from Becky. Becky has been looking for a job and decided to “borrow” Chloe’s car for an interview. Of course, Becky not having a driver’s license, insurance, or any driving experience did not stop her. Unfortunately, Becky had an accident and Bishop Glick is dead. Appleseed Creek Chief of Police, Greta Rose is looking into the incident. Becky could be charged with manslaughter.At the same time someone is terrorizing the Amish in the community. They are destroying property. Who is trying to hurt these peace loving people and why are they doing it? Chloe and Timothy set out to clear Becky and find out who are hurting the Amish. A Plain Death has romance, mystery, friendship, great characters, and a lovely setting! I give it 5 out of 5 stars. The mystery is pretty easy to solve, but I enjoyed the story and characters.

This book is about a young woman, a computer expert, who accepted a job at a small college, in an Amish community. On the way to the town, she came on a young girl, about 17 years old, being harrassed by 2 men, so offered the girl, Becky, a ride. They came to the house she was renting, and Becky asked if she could stay a couple of days. She had run away from the Amish community because she was an artist and the Amish frowned on images of people. Becky's brother comes to see her, and the computer expert falls for him right away. He was kicked out of the Amish community because he had gotten into trouble when younger. He became a carpenter and worked at the college, so they got to see each other often. Timothy, the brother, joined a church that believed in forgiveness and the grace of God. One day, Becky borrowed the car and ran into an Amish buggy, killing the bishop. She had no license and was not authorized to take the car, so she was charged with driving without a license and insurance. They found out someone had cut the brake lines of the car, so she was not charged with murder, but still the lesser charges. Then the Amish had problems with people letting their chickens out, driving vehicles through their soybean fields, etc, so they all worked to find out why and how did it all.This book was intense, romantic, and showed how faith in God helps when things go wrong. I enjoyed this book very much, and the surprise ending surprised me! I highly recommend this book to all.
