Loved it! Brad Gilbert have a really analytic way of looking at tennis, which make it easy to implement his strategies. His mantra is "always observe and analyse". Some of the quotes that helped me with my game was these:"Develop your powers of observation and analyse and then use the information, and your chances of winning will go up by 20 percent or more.""The Game Plan: This process of review will lead me right into the equally important process of planning my strategy; 1. What do I want to make happen? 2. What do I want to prevent from happening?""Most recreational players watch a match like they're looking at somebody play Nintendo at a video arcade. They just stare. I'd watch a match like I was studying for a history test."About John McEnroe: "He was a very smart and observant tennis player. He was always aware of the dynamics of the match and was looking for ways to exploit your weaknesses."

I originally bought this books a few years back. I had mentioned it to my friend at time who said it was a waste of time to read it and I should just play my own game. Mind you this is the same guy that beats me evertime we play. Well I decided to purchase the kindle and audio version a few weeks back. I must say, I should have read this book years ago. I never really took into account the mental part of the game. I was a grinder and just pounded away on the courts and hope I would win. I now look at my opponents in a whole different light now. I play the mental game more than the physical. I now keep a notebook and make notes on my opponants. This book is must read. The irony of all this is that opponent that told me not to read the book was playing the mental game. Turns out he had read it and did not want me to get any advantage from reading the book. Let's just say after reading the book I have beat him on a number of occasions now.

Really good book about strategy and mental preparation not only for tennis but also for other single-player sports like racquetball, squash, golf, etc. I highly recommend it for players who are really interested in improving his/her game. My unique negative feeling is related to the fact that the first edition of the book was written about 1992 and all examples and comments are with players like McEnroe, Lendl, Becker, Sampras, Agassi (all of them are of course legends of the sport) but for readers of the 21th century examples discussing the strategies and styles used by Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, etc. would be more attractive. Any way, the basic principles still remain the same.

The ideas Brad Gilbert shares on how to improve the mental side of the game are both practical and challenging. The approach Brad recommends sound simple but require deep concentration and analytical thinking. Fortunately Brad has done much of the analysis to help in various real world situations. Our task is to assess the situation, and then execute these tactics effectively. That is much harder to do than say, of course. The entertaining real world stories and examples, while slightly dates, are timeless.

I just finished reading the books and have already started applying the lessons to my play...and it is working. Gilbert covers multiple aspects of the game from how to prepare for competition before you're even near a court to how to pack your bag to how to handle multiple situations while playing and maximize your strengths and capitalize on their weaknesses. I especially enjoyed the tips on how to change up the game when you are behind, keep focused under distraction, and deal with hookers, turtles, and pushers. I am currently a 3.0 tennis player so have allot learn from a club pro, but even so, his advice has already improved my play. In particular, I am better now at return of serve, lobs, and remembering to "get the ball earlier."The book was generally fun to read, well-written, and worth the time if you're looking to improve your game. I could see how his advice could be extremely valuable for a high level player or young person with allot of talent but not allot of strategy. I played racquetball for many years and this advice could have helped out allot!!!!! Finally, I loved the advice for the over 35 player and am remembering profilactic ibuprofen and Tiger Balm.

I started playing tennis at 33 years old. Get classes every week and really improved my technique and shots. I have played sports my whole live, so even though I started late in tennis, I manage to develop a descent style. However when it came to a match I always lose, sometimes with players I believe had worst technique than mine. I notice sometimes it took me up to a set (one I always lose) to get into the game, and then put some challenge in the second set.I started browsing the Internet for a book that could teach me strategy. I found "Winning Ugly", read the reviews and bought it! Even tough I am only in the 3rd chapter I felt results already. Yesterday I played a neighbor I had played two times in the past and lost with scores of 0-6, 1-6 / 1-6, 3-6, as I learned from this book I started preparing for the game early in my way driving back home. I analyzed last two games and set an strategy. The result was me winning by score of 6-1, 7-6 (5). I felt like a million bucks after the game!!!The interesting part of it is that my game is exactly the same, so as my opponent's game, but yesterday we played my way! I was able to impose my rhythm, my pace, and my shots... And it was all thanks to "Winning Ugly". I totally recommend it to starters, or recreational players that do not see their game level reflected in the court when they have a match. It is an easy reading by the way.

This is a good instructional book, and a great introduction to competitive tennis at the club level. It concentrates on the analytical side of the game. It's also a solid review for experienced players. Author Brad Gilbert looks beyond stroke technique, and concentrates on how to dissect match play. Audio version did the book justice.

In All Star Superman, Lex Luthor gives Superman a lethal dose of solar radiation, giving him only a few months too live. Superman sets off to perform his last tasks for humanity. This collection of stories shows Superman and his crew at their most heartwarming. Each of Superman's supporting cast gets a day in the limelight to show off what makes this series so good. I can definitely recommend this to any comics fan.

There's a lot of thought put into these stories, different facets of Superman over the last 75 years. It's 12 issues that are telling the ultimate Superman story from what makes Superman "Superman". Each chapter is a story harkening back to the various ages of Superman tales without feeling overtly gimmicky. Art changes styles depending on the mood of the story, I suppose, with some being more appealing than others. It's a lovely crash course on what has made Superman such a special comic book character, you don't have to be that familiar with him to find this collection accessible as it doesn't have a lot of baggage and lays adequate foundation for what is there without feeling bogged down. That said, the story gets halfway through and lost a step, it gets to this Bizarro world as the underworld thing that takes 2 issues and disconnects from the unique cleverness and personality that is the main character, he becomes just "guy in trouble solving things to get home"-man and it's not compelling. Afterwards, it feels like the rest of the story is hurried from chapter to chapter, and while it's ultimately a fairly satisfying conclusion, it never gets that step back all the way. In fact, the DC Animated movie based on All-Star Superman ends up working better on several levels than the comic, but the movie does forgo a very emotionally-important story as well.I would definitely recommend this to a lot of comic book fans, especially light fans who have some pop culture familiarity with Superman but aren't major fans and don't want to commit to an ongoing title.

This is an interesting take on the character. However, it really has too quick of a pace to really contemplate the effects that death would have on a character so pure and deathless. There are very few emotional stakes for Superman throughout this book, which is one of the key factors for why people don't find him as compelling a character. However, it is inventive and reverent to previous Superman storylines. I am both pleased and let down by this book.

There are so many positive reviews, so I am going to simply emphasize how certainly satisfying this wonderful collection is.The stories are not quite chronologically laid out, so be patient if you get confused or need to flip back--the overall narrative will eventually make sense and seemingly unexplained threads will be explained! After reading this (or before, it doesn't really matter), do check out DC One Million. You will appreciate the interwoven story arcs/threads Grant Morrison weaves between that series and All Star. Finally, this has a lot of re-reading value, so do check it out or buy it! Oh, I almost forgot to mention: the artwork is amazing, and you will know what I mean if you are a Quitely fan. If not, you may very well become a Quitely fan after reading this!

I firmly believe any comic book writer wanting to write for Superman should be required to read All-Star Superman. It captures pretty much everything we love about Superman as a character, his incredible power, his kind heart, and his never failing drive to help everyone around him. It reminds us that he's not some overpowered, muscle head who just smashes bad guys, he's everything we aspire to be, not in terms of power, but in intelligence, kindness, and dignity. I don't think every story presented in this book is perfect, particularly the planet of the Bizarros story, but there are far more hits than misses. A must-have for any Superman fan and a good one for any comic book fan wanting something a bit more touching than your usual comic book story.

Love how it taps into Silver Age Superman mythos. Well written and nice art. Stopped buying comics around 90s gimmicks like death of Superman, Superman’s new powers, Batman’s broken back. This one is excellent and looks great with my ipad kindle app.

Grant Morrison is definitely one of the greatest writers of his generation, but his take on Superman is truly phenomenal. When you have someone who can always out strength/speed/think anyone, giving him a story where he's dying shakes that foundation. This Superman is introspective, and his emotions come out in these pages in a way I've never seen before. Truly one of the greatest Superman stories of all time.

This was informative, well written, and well illustrated. It was perfect to assist my kindergarten age son with his report for school.

Good for school projects.

Well written and the art is excellent. I read it to my students for African American Month.

I am an elementary school music teacher & I ordered this book for my classroom. When I read through it upon receiving my order I was immediately impressed! The art work is amazing & the story is very child friendly. You will be pleased with this book as a parent or teacher. It is a wonderful resource!

Book was in excellent condition!

Great book. Taught my son quite a bit and helped with his 1st grade project.

My four year old loves music and I’m starting to teach him to play piano, so this book was a natural fit. His comprehension is good, so getting a book that is K and up didn't phase me. We read this book after reading (and listening to) Jazz Fly a few times, so my son insisted on listening to music while we read it. I got an album of Duke Ellington’s greatest hits and played that in the background while I read him this story. The illustrations were great and my son enjoyed it, but I think he was a little lost on some of the language since there was a lot of (old) slang. For that reason, I think the minimum age on this really should be around first grade. Even then, an adult would probably need to explain what some of the phrases meant. We got it from the library, so we might try it again in another year or so.

Duke Ellington: the Piano Prince and His Orchestra is a brief biography of Duke Ellington, the great jazz pianist and orchestra leader. It only mentions the happy, good events in Ellington's life and seems intended to spark an interest in jazz music in general, and Ellington in particular.Mrs. Pinkey writes in vernacular, dropping the"-ing", talking directly to the reader and using slang from the jazz era. This gives the book a quick rhythm, a jazzy feel, and makes it a joy to read aloud. Her metaphors for the music are colorful and descriptive, at times poetic.Mr. Pinkney uses bright colors and bold lines to express the feeling of music being played. The colors add to the jazzy, joyful rhythm of the words. The texture from the scratch-board technique gives depth to the illustrations. The bold, curving lines propel the eye around the page, following the drawn music. Overall, the art gives the impression of movement, vitality and most of all, of music. The intended audience is preschool age up to around age 8. This is too dense of a book, both in amount of words and amount of story covered, to be appropriate for a typical four year old. On the other hand, it is such a lively book to read out loud, it might hold a preschooler's attention despite a disinterest in and lack of understanding about the subject. For the school age child, I don't think it would be an appropriate read-alone book, for the reason mentioned above but also because many of the slang words will need an explanation.

Thought it would have more of a side by side comparison that would help me transition but did not have that format. Ended up only using it twice and now on the shelf.

The book is a big help for any long time Windows user to have a less painful transition to a new operating system and hardware.

Ok

Good book

thought it would guide a pc user through the differences of the mac, more of a sales manual for mac features

I finally switched to a Mac from my Windows PCs after 30 years of frustrating crashes and hang-ups won. The Mac help topics and tutorials were, at best, difficult to find. Several other Dummies books have been helpful. This book was pretty useless except for 10 pages or so. All I wanted was a brief explanation of how to change a cursor, set up bookmarks folders, have screen displays in a somewhat consistent format, set up browsing tabs. I thought that this would be addressed in this book and a couple of hours was all I needed for a few basics. I have figured out everything I wanted, but only through trial and error and various tutorial websites. The topics weren't addressed in the book.Fifteen hours searching for help vs. a maximum of two hours from the book? The book is a waste of time and money.

Made the transition easier but needs to be updated.

Being new to the Mac OS X system I learned a lot of useful information from this publication that I have been able to use already.

From the Back Cover

One of the best-known, most frequently performed of modern plays, A Doll's House richly displays the genius with which Henrik Ibsen pioneered modern, realistic prose drama. In the central character of Nora, Ibsen epitomized the human struggle against the humiliating constraints of social conformity. Nora's ultimate rejection of a smothering marriage and life in "a doll's house" shocked theatergoers of the late 1800s and opened new horizons for playwrights and their audiences. But daring social themes are only one aspect of Ibsen's power as a dramatist. A Doll's House shows as well his gifts for creating realistic dialogue, a suspenseful flow of events and, above all, psychologically penetrating characterizations that make the struggles of his dramatic personages utterly convincing. Here is a deeply absorbing play as readable as it is eminently playable, reprinted from an authoritative translation.A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

Obviously many people still want to keep the classics in their library, and most of the books have been transferred to ebooks. The problem with these are that a lot of stuff doesn't get in like a cover or description. With these Wisehouse Classics you get it all, including original drawings (only in select books) that were in the original books giving the book personality. If I want to read something I always go for the description to decide. There are so many books from the greatest authors that get passed over daily. I hope they do even more because I would get them all.

I was going to be seeing the play “A Doll’s House 2” and wanted to learn and read about the first novel! The origin story. It was so controversial for the time and you were in suspense as to what would happen! Quite exciting a read! I immediately bought a ticket to see “A Doll’s House”play next month. The message was important for the time and still remains important today even though there have been some societal changes. A worthy read and then the follow up volume. Applause!

This play was a high school reading assignment lo' those many years ago, and as with some other similar assignments, I've undertaken an initiative to re-read them, and consider how the book (as well as I) might have aged in the intervening decades. If fussy memory serves me correctly, I appreciated this play the first time around, and hopefully incorporated some of its messages into my thinking.Henrik Ibsen was the leading Norwegian playwright of the 19th century. This play was first produced in 1879. It is still one of the most popular, and performed plays in the world today. Certainly tame by today's "shock" standards, purportedly it did shock many in the audience when it was first produced, due to its scathing portrait of the staid bourgeois views of the role of women in society and marriage. In brief, not just subordinate, but rather a mere appendage to their father's, at first, beliefs and actions, which would later prepare them for the same role serving their husband. Scandinavia was, and often remains, in the forefront in terms of progressive social ideas and legislation. As one of my Swedish friends would quip: "Sweden is a moral superpower."The two principal characters are Torvald Helmer and his wife, Nora. There are several supporting characters, including Dr. Rank, a family doctor who is ill, Mrs. Linde an old school friend of Nora's, and Nils Krogstad, a bank employee, who is also much else. Money, and the lack thereof, is the catalyst for much of the action. Just when Torvald's promotion to bank manager seems to resolve the money issue, the "sins of the past" revisit the Helmer's with a vengence.Ibsen's portrait of Torvald is one of a man who is insufferably pompous, with very fixed ideas on propriety, and his wife's role as a helpless, not to bright, child. This is no marriage of "soul mates," as the expression has it, for marriages of more recent vintage. Torvald views Nora as a "doll," hence the title. He is also utterly selfish, viewing events only from his perspective, and not how they might have impacted his wife. The audience plays the part of the ancient Greek chorus, realizing how much Nora has actually done for Torvald, without his knowledge. I still remember this portrait from my high school read, and the vow not to turn out the same way.A few decades after this play was first produced, Virginia Woolf wrote her famous A Room of One's Own which had very similar themes. Ibsen though was the first, and the play's denouement, with Nora proclaiming to Torvald that she "needs a life of her own" and must determine who she really is, continues to resonate, almost a century and a half later. The play remains a 5-star read.

Five stars for the story. However, I have to rate the Chios edition with one star to encourage readers to seek out a better edition. The public domain edition (green cover, free download) uses italics when describing the scene or naming the character who is speaking. Only the dialogue is in unitalicized text, making it easier to read. The Wisehouse Classics edition, while containing a few minor typos, has even better formatting, using both indentation and italics to make it easy on the eyes. The Wisehouse edition was also free when I downloaded it.You can click the preview option for each Kindle edition to compare. This edition (Chios) is not well-formatted. No need to pay for it when better editions are available for free download.

Well, modern classic or classic modern. Anyway, I hadn't read this for many, many years. I can't believe how riveted I became as the play progressed. In spite of all that has changed in the world, Ibsen brilliantly evokes the humanity, the search, that is timeless.Beautiful, painful play.

This play is great and is a classic for good reason. The “illustrated” version is pointless. There are a couple of old pictures in the back of the book. You’d be better served googling “images from a dolls house Henrik Ibsen”. This version wasn’t bad in anyway, but it is not what I would consider illustrated.

We see Nora, this perfect little doll, song bird, as her husband says. But underneath we see an aggressive human being, stepping in secretly to obtain a loan to help her husbands health. We see her slow change from this pretty china doll into a real human being. The ending of the play I will leave for the reader to discover. I have see Clara Bloom perform this role with huge success. The play is 100 years ahead of it time

Chosen by my 100 year old English Professor for English Comp 161 (first level required English for college, highest beginner course, everyone must take it). I read the title and assumed it would be a 'chic' book, although it has some feminist overtones, it is not that by any means, and was written by a man - a controversial (at the time) author who revolutionized drama. This play was so popular at the time it first came out, its accurate to say that everyone in the world who was a fan of the theatre would have seen it. With its 'power to women' ideals, some patriarchal societies have been slow in allowing the play to be seen in their countries, or have even changed the story to be more according to their beliefs. A must read for any English student or English history buff.

As a mediator for over 20 years, people often come to me for advice on how they can break into the profession.Their are 2 things I tell them they must do:1. Take a mediation course2. Buy Allen H. Goodman's bookThis is a thin book, but gives the beginner just what they need to answer the basic questions. It is written well and very informative. Judge Goodman also has a similar book for Arbitrators I also recommend.

Mr. Goodman's book is the finest quick primer for a new arbitrator I have ever read. For virtually anyone familiar with any type of legal procedure or mediation, the book lays out the differences specific to Arbitration. Mr. Goodman has arranged the book, so that he presents the answers to the 100 most commonly asked questions about Arbitration. The layout that he uses is in order of the Arbitration process, and thus, the questions and answers are in "as needed" sequence. This makes the book a very useful quick reference tool on all the major topics of the process of Arbitration. The book is very highly recommended to attorneys, mediators and other legal professionals as a very compact and explicit guide and quick reference book about the procedures of Arbitration.

First, I was surprised how slim the book was. But after just a few pages I realized the author states things in a very straight-forward, easy to understand format. Yes, you CAN get a lot of info from under 100 pages. I highlighted a lot.I also appreciated there was no "self-glorification" stories aka "Look how brilliant I am."The sample mediator agreement in the appendix was worth the price of the book alone.

Really good book for a young adult.

As described

I bought this book before I attended a basic mediation class. I loved the format - basically, it asks a question and then answers it point by point. I shared it around the class and everyone thought it was great. It addresses so many things - caucuses, mediation vs. arbitration, and plenty of other questions beginners don't know enough to ask. I wish the same people would publish a how to start your own mediation practice book.

Good book but it is lacking of the technique to deal with people who want to settle the issue but insisting to be right by using "for me, this is what I feel and it is for me"

In his book, Basic Skills of the New Mediator, Allan Goodman has come up with all the right questions with the best answers for anyone properly preparing for a career as a mediator. Goodman successfully takes the complex process of mediation and in an amazingly simple method of questions and answers teaches his readers how to mediate a case from the beginning to end. If you were to have only one book to read on Mediation, this book without question is the one.Michael HackettHuman Resource Management ConsultantBrentwood Tennessee

My daughter is 15 months old. I've been signing basic routine signs to her since she was 3 months old, like; milk, water, eat, snack, more, sleep. But by 12 months old my daughter had really caught on (she started signing herself at 9 months). It was such a success that I wanted to learn more signs with her. This book appealed to me the most out of the few baby sign language books here on Amazon. As soon as this arrived I cracked it open and started reading.PROS:•This book covers everything you need to know to get started and continue signing with your baby/toddler. From how to easily start signing to signing while you sing and everything in between. After I read this book all of my questions were answered.•This book is small and easy to carry with you. I alway have it in my purse or in my diaper bag.•This teaches you to introduce 3-10 signs to start and then add a few more once you feel comfortable. I carry this book with me and memorize at least two new signs a day.•Includes ASL numbers and Manual Alphabet.•More than 300 signs, each with a photo of the woman demonstrating the sign along with a simple description of how to do the sign.•Your facial expressions are important! This book taught me why the face can change the meaning of a certain signs.•This has a list of "Lifesaver Signs" such as "careful", "hot", "no" ect. Most useful section for anyone with a curious toddler.CONS:•None.TIPS!!:•Signing with your baby is easy. I'm a single, working mom and I love it. Once I felt comfortable signing a handful of signs the rest came easily. Now it's just a habit to sign with everything I do around my baby.•Don't expect them to catch on right away. It takes time. Even now that my baby knows 15+ signs, it still takes her a week before she will incorporate using a new sign that I've been teaching her. Other times she will start using the sign right away.•A lot of signs require precise hand shapes that young ones can't master until they're older. They will improvise to their ability of the sign. As they get older the signs will become more accurate.Overall this is a 5-star book. It's absolutely amazing and should be an essential item. It's an amazing feeling being able to communicate with your baby so early on.

I have started reading and using this book now that my baby is 4-months. It has very useful signs, but I wish it had more food (I want to communicate with my baby about sweet potatoes and carrots, but the food included in this book is cookie and candy--but very helpful for feeding)-there are some good signs, but I'll probably only use 20-30 of them as there are a lot that are not useful for daily activities with an infant

Pretty good, with some oddities. With only 300 words, I'm sure hippopotamus and crab, for example, could have been omitted in favor of some more useful words, like toes.

Finally started reading this book now that my daughter is 5 months old (and of course now that the return window has passed 🙄), and it’s missing 25 pages!!! It’s not like they were ripped out, rather it just skips from page 82 to 107. NOT COOL.

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH SIGNING:I'd read about baby signing a little before my son was born and decided it was something I wanted to try. I bought the Baby SIgn Language Basics DVD when I did not receive it as a shower gift. I wasn't sure how it would go, especially as my husband wasn't as enthusiastic as I was about it. Around six months, I started signing "more" with my son a little, then kinda gave up because he just looked like he was too young to really be taking it in. Then, out of the blue one day, he signed "more" to me while I was feeding him! I couldn't believe it! I hadn't even been consistently using the sign, yet he had still picked up on it. This made me realize that you don't have to be religious with the signing for it to work. After that, it was much less intimidating. So we started adding a few more easy signs. Eat, milk, mommy, daddy, cookie, cracker, fruit. He picked up on it so quickly!I cannot explain how amazing it is to be able to communicate with your child before they can form words. Even after my son began "talking," we wouldn't have known what he was trying to say most of the time without the signs to go along with it. Some people worry that signing can slow speech development, but if I'm not mistaken, there's research to the contrary. In our experience, I think maybe our son was slower to begin speaking out loud, but he could still sign more words than his peers could say and in the long run I think this gave him an advantage. While "speaking" was a slower concept for him to develop, he had a head start on the concept of "communicating." I think him being able to tell us what he wanted helped us avoid some tantrums and fussing. Talking was kinda like a light bulb to him. One day, he had the confidence to start trying new words and he would say anything. By 18 months he was talking as much as his peers and had dropped most of his signs. Now that we've started signing with his 6 month old sister, he has picked up most of his signs again! My advice: Start around 6 months. Don't feel like you have to be an expert or sign constantly. You can do as much or as little as you want, but I think it makes a huge difference!OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PRODUCT:This is a great, affordable resource for learning to sign to your baby. I bought the DVD before my son was born and that's all I had. The DVD is definitely the best way to learn the signs. Seeing them done by an actual person is so much easier than reading "directions" in a book. That being said, I have since bought this DVD and book combo for expecting friends and after flipping through it I was jealous and wished I had a book too. The book is a great quick reference to remind you of a sign. Whenever I forgot a sign, I had to put the DVD in and navigate the menus to find it. The book would have been a lot easier. That's why this is such a great combo! The signs they choose, for the most part are very practical. Some of them we never use enough for my son to learn (like the holidays, crab, starfish, mountain, sand, teacher) and some that I wish were there that weren't (snacks, blocks, pillow). But really, most of what we wanted was there. Plus, a bunch we never got around to teaching him. I also like that they give alternative signs on some of the important ones that are difficult for babies to do.The signs are presented alphabetically. You can watch them all in order, watch one starting letter at a time from the menu or start at a specific word. Basically, each starting letter is a "chapter" on the DVD, and the starting letter sign list is the "scene selection." It would have been nice to have an additional menu, where I could view the signs in groups (animals, foods, colors, actions, objects, feelings, commands), but I realize this would have been pretty complicated to organize on the DVD. I actually typed out the entire list in excel and grouped them by category so that I could learn them that way. I thought it was easier to learn them by category instead of alphabetically, as many of the same types of words have similar signs.I like to get this for every expecting mom I know. (I've ordered 3 in the past in addition to the DVD only I originally bought for myself!)

I get this book for everyone I know who is having a baby. My sister bought it for me when I was pregnant - it was probably the best baby gift we received. We started signing to my daughter when she was 6 months old, she started signing back at 8 months old. It was a total game changer; she was finally able to communicate what she needed. We keep this book on our end table so anytime we need to look up a sign it's there. Book is very clear on how to make the sign and has signs for hundreds of words.
