Review

"Nancy McCabe has written one of the most compelling books I've ever read. I read it on the plane, on the train, on vacation, at every opportunity till I'd gobbled it up.  Here is a truthful story for every parent and child about their love, hope, and frustration with one another."—Sena Jeter Naslund, author of Ahab's Wife and Abundance, A Novel of Marie Antoinette“In this heartfelt memoir, McCabe shares a touching journey as she travels to China to introduce her adopted daughter to the places and people from her past. The resulting story  radiates wisdom about cross-cultural connections, while acknowledging the struggles of child-rearing.  Blue Willow Bridge offers lessons in love and patience that will apply not only to mothers and fathers of adopted children, but to all parents. “—Laura Brodie, author of One Good Year: A Mother and Daughter’s Educational Adventure. “With lyrical sensitivity and frank humor, the author of Meeting Sophie explores the myriad logistical and emotional facets of international adoption. Nancy McCabe is keenly aware of the challenge in reconciling her daughter's American and Chinese identities, as they travel to Sophie's birthplace—a journey that's less a closure than an aperture. Crossing the Blue Willow Bridge is a brave, balanced, nuanced narrative, offering a complex answer to the simple question: what is home?”—Sarah Saffian, author of Ithaka: A Daughter's Memoir of Being Found“In prose both graceful and unsentimental, Nancy McCabe tells the story of the search for identity and the yearning for connection that is at the core of the mother-daughter relationship. As she returns to her adoptive daughter's birthplace, as she struggles with the cultural divide she sees at home, as she watches her daughter, a budding gymnast, ‘throw herself into empty space toward the high bar,’ McCabe learns both to love and to let go. This is a book for every mother, adoptive and biological, who watches her daughter with love, awe—and bated breath.”—Lauren Kessler, author of My Teenage Werewolf: A Mother, A Daughter, A Journey through the Thicket of Adolescence

To read this book is to take a journey yourself. Another reviewer stated she "gobbled" this book, and that was my initial reaction as well. But then I would re-read sections and savor them. Those who are looking for a saccharin, glossed-over rosy account of adoption can go elsewhere. I ached with Nancy as she describes her worries, and understood her perplexed feelings at Sophie's reactions and comments, not so unlike comments from my own daughters at the same age. I sighed with relief when they were able to get some closure during this journey to China, although maybe not quite in the way they expected. (When do we ever get closure, really?) I like the book's open ending--it alludes to possible stories in the future of their continued journey. A good read and a keeper. (Then again, maybe I'm partial, having known Nancy for 30 years.) This is an honest accounting of a journey that is at times stressful and strenuous, but above all, is worth the experience.

This true account presents three fascinating stories in one: a mother's view of her adopted adolescent daughter, the daughter's view of her status as an adopted child, and a fascinating "you are there" journey to the daughter's birthplace, China. McCabe's details around the massive differences in culture--Chinese people gleefully push and shove their way through crowds as if it was a sport, and we see time and again that "service" in Chinese restaurants is spotty at best--comprises one layer of the trip. The heart of story lies in Sophie, the daughter, despite having left her homeland as a baby, retaining a sense memory of her Chinese culture, feeling at home there, and revealing a touching transformation that in turn transforms McCabe's vision of her daughter. I recommend setting aside a day to read this book--once begun, you won't want to put it down. By the end, the reader feels, at a gut level, not only the challenges of an adopted child's journey in life, but the enduring strength of a mother who wants to provide the best for her child.

This is a wonderful travel adventure! Nancy McCabe's observations are frank and witty. Her writing is wry and graceful as she tours China from the perspective of a cautious traveler hoping with her young daughter to solve the mystery of her daughter's origins. I loved her descriptions of visiting the Great Wall. But even more than a unique travel adventure, this is a moving reflection of contemporary parenthood, narrated with courage and grace.

. . . good to feel almost as if I went along on the trip. One of my granddaughters from China is slightly younger, and MUCH like Sophie! It was very interesting to read the thoughts and actions/reactions of another adopted daughter of China, as well as her mother's perceptions and responses. They had quite an adventure-one that encourages us in considering our own return trip to China.

This book hits the target audience: anyone who has an interest in adoption and/or China will find this an interesting book. Well-written. Excellent.

The story jumped around too much. I think the author wrote the book In a stream-of- consciences style that lost my interest about 1/4 of the way into the book. I never finished it.

An engagingly personal account of a mother/daughter trip to explore the daughter's country of birth. McCabe shares the touching, annoying, funny, difficult and life-changing moments of her and 10-yr-old Sophie's trip through China. You also get a sweet, honest glimpse of their home life and the years spanning the initial adoption trip and this return trip. I hope she writes more books, I didn't want this one to end. This is a book not only for adoptive parents, but for any single parents, multiracial families, parents in the 'sandwich generation' or anyone at all interested in a touching glimpse into one family's life.
