This is a nice book. Delivery was right on time.

I bought this book after much searching for it in local bookshops. This volume, when it arrived, was beautiful to look at. Bound in a classic and impressive cover, it has 2 photos of Thoreau for fans of his works (such as me). But, it is his words which give one pause. Which make the idea of living in the woods, completely self-sufficiently, not as far-fetched as it may first seem. I enjoy this book each time i read it. It's a classic, full of great quotes for those who ruminate on the nature of man, and the beauty of living simply.

A true masterpiece that will make you rethink your life. Thoreau was a genius.

I needed this book to write a research paper on, and as I'm sure everybody knows, there are so many editions of this great American literary work. After looking around on Amazon, I opted for this edition. I liked the look of the cover and was glad that it came with "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience." I was even willing to pay the slightly higher price for this edition than that of any other on Amazon.However, about two weeks after I submitted my purchase and paid, I received something I did not order. To be sure, it WAS Walden - it even included "Civil Disobedience" - but the cover was not the same as advertised. My name and shipping address appeared on the receipt, but it said the order was placed by a different individual who will remain nameless. Also, the order number on the receipt did not jive with the one I got in the email. I contacted the seller of this edition I ordered, and within five minutes had a reply asking for my shipping address to check if there was a mix-up. I replied, and it's been two weeks - I have not heard back.I'm giving the review three stars because my beef is not with the book itself. The book is awesome, filled with great wisdom. I'll quote from the book itself "While civilization has been improving our houses, it has not equally improved the men who are to inhabit them." Applied to my current situation, amen to Mr. Thoreau.

This collection has Henry David Thoreau's two most famous works: Walden and "Civil Disobedience." Both are immortal literary works that should be read by all; anyone who does not have them would do well to get them here.Walden is one of the great classics of American letters. It has been somewhat unfortunately tainted by its reputation as the "treehugger's Bible," but this misses the point. Thoreau obviously loved nature and was one of the nation's first environmentalists - indeed, modern day environmentalism can be traced directly to him -, but the core of the book is not a simple stating of nature's virtues. Thoreau lays down nothing less than a philosophy of life. Like "Civil Disobedience," Walden preaches the virtues of individual liberty and the importance of Man over State. Thoreau raises some staggeringly deep existential questions: If a man does not depend on the State but still resides within its boundaries, need he pledge allegiance? Need he pay taxes? Thoreau tells us how to get the most out of life by living simply. Indeed, much like Rousseau, he seemed to basically believe that the true essence and spirit of man resides in the state of nature. He assures us that, if all lived as simply as he did at Walden, there would be very little theft, crime, violence, envy, or jealousy. He urges us all to live our own lives as we see fit, neither depending on or heeding others, and to avoid merely becoming another mindless drone in conformist society."Resistance to Civil Government" - or "Civil Disobedience," as it became known - is an essential part of American literature, culture, and history. Even more remarkably, it is undeniable proof that great literature can have a real effect on the world even long after it is written and ignored. The essay is world famous as the founding text of civil disobedience, i.e., non-violent protest, and its effect on such luminaries as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King was profound, thus sealing its immortality. This alone makes it essential for all.However, it is easy to forget that the essay is a masterpiece in itself. Essentially Thoreau's highly individual expression of his mentor Emerson's self-reliance doctrine applied to government, it has a wealth of depth and nuance despite its brevity. The words are few but the implications endless; it has enough food for proverbial thought to last a lifetime. The gist is very clear, but the implications have spoken very differently to many different people. The work's nature - and Thoreau's generally - is such that it and he are championed by everyone from neocons to libertarians to liberals, and the truly notable thing is that all are justified. This underscores the importance of reading the essay for ourselves.Its main query is "What does the individual owe the state?," the answer being a resounding "Nothing." Thoreau takes the maxim that the government that governs least governs best to its logical conclusion by wishing for one that governs not at all - a brave wish very few have seriously dared to make or even conceive. He makes a highly principled stand for individual rights and autonomy, arguing very persuasively that people should be able to go about their business without interference. This of course sounds very much like current libertarians, and their position has indeed hardly ever been better argued. Many related and implied issues - protests against taxation, conscription, etc. - also seem to support them. However, it is important to remember that the essay's crux and most famous section - Thoreau's account of a night spent in jail for refusing to pay a poll tax because he did not want to support war or slavery - was and is immensely liberal. Few issues can be more central to current liberalism than an anti-war stance, and slavery was the era's great liberal cause. All this must be kept firmly in mind amid the many attempts to reduce Thoreau to a current party platform. He was at once too simple and too complex for this and would not have suffered himself to be thus reduced; nor does the essay justify it.Integral as all this is, the work's core point is arguably a new self-reliance argument above and beyond immediate practical considerations. Thoreau certainly had a practical, political streak, especially compared to relative idealists like Emerson, but he thought individuality more sacred than anything. He articulated this more fully elsewhere, but it is very present here. His work is thus in many ways the best kind of self-help material - and, unlike the mass of current self-help tripe littering bookshelves, is intellectually and even aesthetically pleasing. Thoreau was the most thoroughly local writer that can be imagined, but his willingness to look deep inside himself for the eternal truths present in all people has made him an inspiration to millions and millions of people from across the political spectrum and indeed the world. This essay is a major part of his legacy and thus one of the very few works that literally everyone should read. Few can be the same afterward, and it will change many lives; it is nothing less than one of the most important documents ever written, and its value simply cannot be exaggerated.This collection is an excellent primer for those new to Thoreau, and those who have not already done so should open their minds to him immediately - and once done, they will never be closed again.

I was very excited to receive this cookbook. For months I've been making my vegan recipes from blogs and was ready to have my very first vegan cookbook. After browsing it and rereading it many times and after trying quite a few recipes in the book, I'd have to say that I'm a bit disappointed. I definitely don't hate it and I haven't had any total disasters, but overall I just haven't found it inspiring or any of the recipes particularly phenomenal. That said, I really liked the soup section, my whole family enjoyed the homemade chocolate date balls, the oil-free chocolate zucchini muffins were delicious and I'm hoping to make many more of her recipes in the future. However, the apple crumble was okay but I wouldn't serve it to guests; the orange-miso dressing for the soba noodle bowls was gross (and I'm a huge fan of miso); the tofu scramble was not particularly great and I think I'll stick to my own recipe for that one.As for the healthiness of the book, I would consider most of the recipes pretty indulgent. Almost every recipe has oil and added sugar. I wish there were more salad recipes and fewer cashew-based creamy dishes. I also wish some sections were more varied. For example, the breakfast section has multiple different oatmeal recipes (all of which I've created my own variations of on my own in the past) but no simple/healthy pancake or waffle recipes. The dessert section has two chocolate tart recipes but not enough fruit tarts (or fruit-based recipes for that matter). The savory sections have a gross-looking nacho dip, tex-mex casserole and "fiesta bites" (all of which are heavy on the oil and processed ingredients) but few simple vegetable-rich dishes.Overall, I am not unhappy that I bought the book, but I expected more from it. I love her blog and I've gained so many fantastic recipes from her blog. I'm sorry to write such a critical review, but I hope it can help others who are considering what they want from a vegan cookbook.

I am not vegan.I point this out because despite not being able to come up with a single thing about myself that places me in Angela Liddon's target market, this is still a contender for my most favorite cookbook in the whole world...and I've barely scratched the surface.I first encountered Liddon courtesy of Google; I was hunting for a lentil loaf recipe and Liddon's blog popped up. I distinctly remember almost passing the ohsheglows result by entirely because of the blog's name, which - probably in no small part because I'm neither a she nor the least bit glowy - sounded a little too twee for me.I made that recipe, and truly loved it - loved it enough that it joined the ranks of my all-time favorites - but it wasn't until I read a review for this very cookbook, accompanied by a different recipe (Thai peanut noodle bowl) that sounded fairly delicious, that I started to consider buying a cookbook new when then only cookbooks I buy ever are used and cheap. (They're hard to justify when the internet is right there, you know?)I'm really, really glad I bought it. I consider a cookbook a win when I find maybe five recipes worth making more than once. This statement may be a tad premature, but I'm pretty good at judging how well I'll like a recipe, and I have a strong suspicion that this one is going to have a (much) higher success rate.One thing I've always disliked about buying cookbooks online is how difficult it is to guess what you're going to end up with. You buy a perfectly normal-sounding vegetarian cookbook and end up with 60 recipes using shiitake mushrooms or three chapters of boring salads that are only slightly different from the salads you came up with on your own years ago. So in light of that, here is a breakdown of the recipes.Breakfast - 10 recipes - including several that sound like they'd be pretty swell at any time of day.Smoothies, Juice, and Tea - 11 recipes - probably the biggest disappointment for me in the book; I'm not big on smoothies, juice, or tea...and when I want something like that, I don't need a recipe to make it.Appetizers - 8 recipes - including a nacho dip that sounds bizarre to this non-vegan. Not bad, necessarily, but...there's no cheese! That one's weirdness is offset by a strawberry-mango guacamole that may have possibly made me drool a bit.Salads - 8 recipes - I'm good with the smaller number of salads included here; I've got salad recipes coming out the wazoo, and never mind that I'm usually pretty good at coming up with a salad all on my own. Some of them are pretty unique, though, and the "Long Weekend Grilled Salad" sounds outstanding.Soup - 7 recipes - A couple of these sound a bit weird, but there are two for sure that I want to make as soon as I get to the grocery store again.Entrees - 15 recipes (or 16, depending on your reckoning...the noodle bowl has two different dressings) - I've already been impressed by the two I've made, and several of the others sound really original and satisfyingly hearty.Sides - 9 recipes - some of these feel a bit like cheating (baked fries needed a recipe?), and I admit, nothing here really spoke to me, but we'll see.Power Snacks - 9 recipes - two roasted chickpea recipes is probably pushing it, but I possibly would have bought this book just for the peanut butter cookie dough bites. The chia pudding parfait is getting made forthwith, BTW.Desserts - 11 recipes - some of these seem like an awful lot of work when I'm perfectly satisfied by boxed brownies, but every last one sounds delicious.Homemade Staples - 27 recipes - this chapter almost made me knock the book down to four stars - it's totally cheating to call things like oat flour and roasted garlic "recipes," and by my count there's only 88 recipes before this chapter, not "over 100" - but I think the others made up for it.You're no doubt getting as sick of reading this as I am of typing it, so just a few other random comments about the book: First, the photography is breathtaking. There are lots of pictures (possibly one for each recipe, I didn't keep track), and every last one is colorful and artful and makes the food look delicious. Second, there seems to be a minimum of weird ingredients. It's clear Liddon has a fondness for chia seeds (never tried them, but now I'm curious), but the fact that I can make a good number of these things without making a trip to a specialty store gets points from me. Third, the recipes I've made - and, from the way it looks, most of the ones I haven't - have a terrific balance of flavors. This stuff may be simple, some of it, but definitely not bland! Fourth, while there aren't any nutrition facts provided - a disappointment, since figuring it myself is so putzy - each recipe has notes in the header with things like "gluten free" and "nut free." And finally, each of these recipes is obviously easily adaptable. I already tweaked the lentil loaf recipe to one that's a bit less of a pain to make (but retaining the deliciousness), and since I'm not vegan, it's pretty clear how I can incorporate real dairy or whatever. (Sorry, but I shall never ever give up cheese. I would rather die. And I'm only being a little facetious.) At the same time, these recipes all look straightforward enough and flavorful enough that I may very well try some of them exactly as written.Now that you've grown old reading this, I'll just summarize by saying that although I haven't made all the recipes in this book, the ones I've made all deserve five stars...and I'm looking forward to trying most of the rest of them. This book has inspired me to cook in a way that I haven't been inspired in a really long time.TL;DR: Buy this. For real.

This book is amazing! I've only done 5 recipes so far and even my non-vegan friends are like WOW! This girl knows how to cook! This was an invaluable purchase! This book has EVERYTHING you can imagine : from simple 5 minutes recipes for a delicious overnight cold oatmeal (my favorite to prepare at night for a healthy awakening) to incredibly complex and delicious recipes that make take a couple of hours to make, but OH MY Do I glow when I eat them? This books makes me even happier I became vegan and it is a MUST for the beginning vegan that is unsure about taste and that especially wants to stay away from the overly processed vegan alternatives on the market. Do you want to make your own vegan almond butter? Check! How about some tasty but healthy tacos? Check! What if you feel like some thai food? Check! Make your own delicious vegan sour cream? Check! I really could go on and on...so far the recipes are nothing short of incredible! You will enjoy this book, I promise!

This is my all-time favorite cookbook, hands down. I've had this book since it came out, and I've made ~30 of the recipes so far, and almost every single one is something I would make again. Her recipes are very familiar and easy to make. You won't need to go find a weird ingredient in a health food store to make these recipes; you just need to have access to whole, plant-based foods.I read a couple of the negative reviews out of curiosity, and I couldn't disagree more. One person said that her estimated cooking times were inaccurate. I found them to be pretty darn accurate. Another person complained that her recipes are complex and take a long time to make. I find this one particularly confusing, because one of the things I love about this book is that the recipes are quick to make!Overall, I think you'll like this book if you want to eat healthier without counting calories, and if you want recipes for familiar foods that are healthier but still incredibly satisfying.

Among the nearly 1,000 new terms in the 28th edition are G.fast; VoLTE; IP transition; IP tunneling; double SSID; Gigasphere; sponsored data; off-cap; hard cap; on-net service; off-net service; regulatory creep; regulatory lag; regulatory overhang; device convergence; network convergence; protocol convergence; industry convergence; fog computing; data center tiers 1, 2, 3, and 4; local exchange carrier tiers 1 and 2; wire center tiers 1, 2, and 3; wireless carrier tiers 1, 2, and 3; and Internet service provider tiers 1, 2, and 3.Still puzzling, however, is the dictionary's continued omission of terms such as Wi-Fi access point, Wi-Fi hot-spot, payload filtering, URL filtering, in-band interference, and out-of-band interference; as well as the omission of newer terms such as LTE broadcast and LTE Direct.Commendably, many definitions that first appeared in earlier editions have been updated to reflect evolving technologies and changes in the market place. That said, many other definitions still need to be updated.On the down side, hundreds of definitions -- maybe even thousands -- have factual errors, and there are tons of spelling errors. In a dictionary of this size, with nearly 28,000 definitions, even if 90% of the definitions are fine, that still leaves a lot that need fixing.Bottom line: if you need a dictionary on telecommunications and networking, get this one, even in spite of its flaws. It's by far the most comprehensive telecom dictionary on the market.UPDATE: A newer edition (30th) of this dictionary is now out. Many of the flawed definitions that marred the 28th and earlier editions have been fixed, and many new definitions have been added. Get the 30th edition. Hands down, it's a MUCH better product.

Shocked at the variety of sources and detail and volume of information. He even has a few crazy ones, yet the professionalism is spot on.I have had co workers drop their jaws in our NOC having no idea and this guy would have the entry. Crazy crazy knowledge on subjects.Helped me study N+ Conptia!!

First saw it at a bookshop but couldn't bring myself to buy it right there, even though reading about esoteric technical terms and abbreviations, with editorializing by the author, was great fun. Bought it later after some consideration. The information and articles before the definitions are extra bonus.

Newton's book is an up to date compendium of telecom and data terminology. I have used editions dating back to one of the first editions and have found it clear, comprehensive, and represents a gold sandard. Perhaps some unique terms are not included but oftentimes they are used by specialists only. I try to keep a copy at hand for clarification all the time.

Excellent source for words, abbreviations, acronyms, etc. The font size is too small for my liking. I would gladly pay more for the extra production cost to use a larger, easier reading font. Overall, a very good reference book. Thank you !!

This is one of those books which should be widely read; a concise explanation of “energy” as relates to society beginning with terms and definitions which most people do not consider. Smil starts with the obvious (but often overlooked) statement that we on earth have no source of energy which is not provided by the sun in some form or another.From there, we start with the calculations regarding the number of calories any human needs to get through the day; pretty basic and clearly explained values.This is followed by the overall history of energy in human society, beginning with foraging and scavenging societies, using human muscle energy in more effective forms as a result of human reasoning; tools. Accompanied by (largely effective) sidebar notes, the narrative then progresses through the use of draft and ridden animal muscle, direct water and wind power, and then on to the use of ‘stored’ solar energy in the form of carbon and radioactive fuels, to the present. The fragility of society prior to modern use of those ‘stored’ sources is eye-opening and should serve as a corrective to anyone hoping to return to some romantic, pristine, autarky.I’m sure this was not intended for the general audience; the terminology and notation suggests and requires a certain level of education. But at times Smil seems to change units of measure in what looks a bit of braggadocio. Joules, calories, watts, any will do, but switching back and forth requires mental gymnastics and introduces the chance of errors; there is no reason to make a book less understandable than the transfer of information requires.Similarly, there is no reason for the pedantry regarding the phrase “Industrial Revolution”; I recall no one using the phrase to mean a ‘revolution’ in X years. As it was intended to mean a rapid change in many social arrangements, it was just that and is a useful shorthand for that phenomenon.Disregarding such caviling, we are, at well-researched and well-argued length, presented with the uncontroversial fact that we are consuming carbon energy resources far beyond replacement rates and that use is resulting in environmental problems which could be very serious. Fortunately, the author is not given to hyperbole; those environmental problems are neither certain in time or severity.But as Smil makes clear, there are really few alternatives. Our recent fantasies regarding wind or solar are never going to provide the energy surplus we currently enjoy, even if we had 100% battery storage technology. There is simply not enough ‘instant’ solar energy available to support the style to which we have become accustomed and others hope to achieve.Citing some studies regarding ‘happiness’ vs wealth which I find far from convincing, the author seems to come down on the side of drastically reduced energy consumption. He never suggests coercion to achieve that end, but it’s doubtful that those who are used to luxury and those who quest for it are likely to voluntarily reduce that standard of living or the desire for it, regardless of Smil’s personal (righteous!) choice of a 1Kw automobile.Begging to differ, I come down on the ‘let’s develop non-carbon energy’ side; nuclear. And if we are to prevent those possible environmental problems, we’d better get going on developing safe nuclear energy right now, rather than whingeing about the morality of Exon’s profit margin.

I purchased this book based on a recommendation by Bill Gates. It's very interesting and takes you through the history of how humans have used and transformed energy and how that increasingly efficient energy use has advanced societies (and where it hasn't).Be aware that it is very technically dense with a lot of specifics and almost reads like a textbook so it's not what I would call a "light read" but if you like that sort of thing than this book is recommended.

I am only 70% through the book, knowing that the rest will touch upon the noton that our dependence on a very high consumption of energy based on fossil fuels is unsustainable and that renewables gives only some comfort to this conclusion. As an economist I truly which that this perspective was more commonly available through education, as the available energy influcence on economic wealth and especially a long term perspective on this is severly overlooked in todays financial world.So thumbs up, 5 stars, is given to the author for puting the whole energy history in context, and how vital it is to appreciate our fossil fuel workhorses for now and it also led to my appreciation that we can use the energy surplus as today to prepare for a sustainable future of tomorrow. Even with less energy, it is possible to sustain a civilisation based on "energy helpers" so that living standards are still acceptable. The calculations back and forth when it comes to Joules/tons/kwh (or even barrels) is very useful for engaging the mind outside speed reading. An eye opener for me was the 90% energy conversion for electricity for kinetic energy as opposed to 40% for diesel and 25% for gasoline. Going electric for personal transportation based on renewables really makes sense overall!

Truly fascinating. It is hard to describe how impressive this masterful history is. A summation of a world of knowledge in a thorough, understandable, and context-rich book. Required reading for anyone interested in energy, sustainability, and the future of humanity.

Based on my previous Vaclav Smil reading, I was expecting (hoping) for more of a big-picture technical survey (along the line of "the physics of building and maintaining civilizations"). I was somewhat disappointed to discover a conventional historical narrative of the discovery and exploitation of the various familiar energy sources. Admittedly, more a case of missed expectations rather than any specific shortcoming of the book.

I was really disappointed in this book. It’s a history and is full of facts that seem almost randomly addressed. There is a lot of interesting information, but none of it seems to have a point , it’s just a collection of data. The citations are probably important to someone, but to a non academic they are just irritating and disrupt the flow of the text. I found Richard Rhodes’ book Energy:a human history much more informative and much much more entertaining.

As a mechanical engineer, I was taught a lot about energy and worked with it my whole career. I've always loved history as well. Now, I read a book that traces the human story along with the thread of how energy is found, grown, used, eaten, wasted...all that...and really dominates society in so many ways. This is a book long on detail so some may feel overwhelmed by it. My favorite part was the last 20% where the author appears to summarize the influence of energy on all the major domains of civilization. A book that I am keeping for reference and rereading.

Vaclav Smil’s books are always enjoyable. He demonstrates that the material civilisation that we have is the result of people acquiring the means of energy production. Yet he is also aware that energy is not the only thing that matters - it matters much, but the way it is used also depends on the culture and society.
